The first people to live in Summit were the Lenape Indians. The Lenape moved from their original home in eastern Pennsylvania to a location near Summit in 1693. The area was named after Sir William Johnson, who surveyed the area for the British government. In 1714, the British burned down the Lenape village and replaced it with a new settlement called Princeton. The town was renamed Princeton during World War II because of its importance as a munitions plant.
