The Coast Guard gift history in Summit, New Jersey began with the establishment of the Coast Guard Station at Portsmouth in 1903. The station was manned by a small detachment of soldiers and civilians from New York City. The first gifts given to the station were books, hats, and other items for use on the beach. In 1916, a smallpox inoculation dispensary was established at the station. Gifts continued to be given for services such as this through out the years. In 1954, the station was moved to Summit and became known as Station Pointe. Stevens served as the Commandant of the Coast Guard Station at Summit. In 1861, Commodore John J. Fiske became the first Chief of Naval Operations when he was appointed to that position by President Abraham Lincoln. During World War II, the Coast Guard Station at Summit played a critical role in coastal defense and helping civilians escape Mussolini's Italy. The station closed its doors forever on October 1st, 1972 after serving for 73 years.
Summit is a borough in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough's population was 15,878. The name "Summit" comes from the Summit Lake Resort which was founded in 1876 by George Washington Smith and later became a resort town. Summit is located on the border of Mercer and Burlington counties. The first settler in what is now Summit Township was John Stone who arrived in 1799. stone barrow still stands at milepost 10 on I-95 northbound near mile marker 494. In 1836, James Kapp bought 100 acres (40 ha) of land east of present-day White Sands Road for $1,000 cash and named it Mount Kappen after his father-in-law John Kappenberger who had purchased the same land two years earlier from Nicholas Biddle. In 1876, George Washington Smith set up a resort at Summit Lake known as "Summit Lake Resort." The first post office was established at Summit on April 8, 1877. By 1880, there were over 30 businesses operating in Summit Township including five blacksmiths, thirteen tailors shopkeepers, four farmers (seven farms with 20 to 50 acres), three harness shops and one sawmill along with several residences including an original frame house built by Mr. Smith himself. In 1915 when Princeton University opened its new campus within walking distance of all township residents except for students living on Princeton's main campus; many people turned their homes into boardinghouses or vacation rentals due to lack of space on their own properties or because they could not afford to move out during school termouts or vacationsdue to high prices for housing throughout New Jersey during that time period let alone afford college tuition; this shortage led to many businesses closing down either because they could not compete with larger universities which offered more amenities such as libraries and ice rinks; some closed permanently while others like Academy Manufacturing Company which manufactured sashes for cars until 1955 continued business until 1994 when it merged with Yankee Candle company creating one largest candle factory outside Manhattan City Limits NJ). Summit was a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is now part of the Hackensack area. The first settler in Summit was John D'Angelo in 1774. There were no schools until 1812 when a schoolhouse was built by Nicholas Rowe and his wife Sarah. In 1814, there were three families living in Summit: the Allersons, the Hunnigses, and the Rodrigueses. On October 15 of that year, Andrew Jepsen became the first white person to cross over from Staten Island into Mercer County on horseback and he named his new land "Summit." In 1868, John Fritsch donated land for a public square which would house both local government functions as well as businesses within town limits. Thesquare's central feature was an octagonal fountain known as "The Pinnacle." On May 17th of that year, Governor James Woodbury issued a proclamation creating Summit as a borough with its own officer-in-chief and board of Chosen Freeholders (later called Borough Council). The resolution to form borough specifically mentioned that "the present boundaries of Township No. 2 will continue to be used until modified or repealed by resolution or ordinance of our Borough Council." On July 9th of that year, Mayor George Aiken proposed that Summit should join forces with neighboring municipalities including Paramus and Passaic in order to improve transportation within the township while also expanding opportunities for economic development within their respective areas. Unfortunately because both Paramus and Passaic had already formed their own boroughs without consulting with Summit they failed to receive any support from either municipality which led to their merger on December 3rd of that year becoming Paramus-Passaic Borough NJ Incorporated. It wasn't until 1969 when Borough President Harry Weisburg submitted legislation authorizing annexation by Summit so it could become part of Paramus-Passaic Borough NJ Incorporated but this proposal too passed without objection despite being tabled three times due to lack of consensus among residents about whether or not they wanted to annex their own community into another borough rather than keep it separate from Paramus-Passaic BorughtNJ Incorporated. On January 1st 1970 Summit finally annexed intoParamus-Passaic Borough NJ Incorporated making them one Unit!
