South River, New Jersey is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,796 at the 2010 Census. South River is home to the only international bridge over the Passaic River in New Jersey and forms part of the Paterson- Glassboro line of PATH commuter rail service. The borough was formed on December 12, 1814 from portions of Borough of Glassboro. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now SouthRiver were Dutch farmers who named it "Rivierdal" after their river (the Rensselaer saw this name spelled "Riversdale"). In 1728 John Miller built a small farm on what is now called Livingston Street near where the train station sits today. On October 14th, 1788, a group of men from Northampton Township founded South River as an agricultural village under the name "Paterson". In 1800 Samuel Haddon purchased land east of present-day Livingston Street for $850 and erected a small house thereon known as Haddon's Farmstead. This area became known as West Paterson and eventually developed into what is today SouthRiver. fishing rod manufacturer Alfred Olmsted also set up shop here early in his career making rods out of Birch tree branches which he would then mail directly to customers around America. By 1892 both Olmsted & Company and Jardine Matheson had opened stores along Broadway in what is today SouthRiver - two years before Newark’s incorporation as a city! On September 15th 1898 large flames destroyed much of downtown Paterson during an afternoon heat wave that swept across much of northeastern NJ including SouthRiver! A day later arsonists burned down one half block – this gave rise to current slogan “If You Can Fix It – We Can Do It Better” which has stuck with us ever since! Downtown Paterson slowly recovered but never regained its former glory until World War II when parts were razed for new housing developments all while still functioning as businesses including banks, factories and more! Afterward downtown gradually lost its commercial significance until it finally gentrified beginning in the late 1990s with some new highrise buildings being built just south of Interstate 95 (south side). Unfortunately this process has done little to reverse or even slow down overall property values which have continued to soar over recent decades! The borough was formed from portions of Boroughof Glassboro on December 12th 1814 following merger between neighboring townships: Edison Parish (northwest), Clifton Park (northeast), both parts of Union Township (southwest) and both parts of Monmouth County (south). At the time it consisted primarily onlyof rural areas north and east Of course due greatlyto numerous founding fathers homes are still standing throughout our community however many notable structures such as Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic Church have been demolished or converted into other uses like mixed use apartments etc... various streets remain unchanged thruout our community giving it an unique feel & character unlike most municipalities
