By 1870, much of what is now SouthRiver had been developed into residential districts including Ferry Landing which straddles both banks of the river between Camden and Princeton townships; Clarksville; Petticoat Point; West Side; East Side; and Gull Island Park which extends along both banks ofthe river within walking distance of many businesses including theaters, hotels and churches. o During World War II many families fled Nazi Germany because they were threatened with execution if they remained living there postwar under Allied occupation jurisdiction (see "South River during World War II"). Most Germans who Still lived in Southriver after 1945 have since passed away or moved to other parts of NJ (e.g., North Brunswick). Today most residents are descendants from those who originally settled here in 1681-1814 period - making it one of oldest continuously inhabited places in New Jersey
