After the Korean War, USAF units deployed again to areas of the world where air power could play an important role including Central America, Southeast Asia and Operation Desert Storm during the 1990s. Today,South River AFB continues its proud history as one of the nation’s busiest military installations with more than 4500 active duty members and nearly 1300 civilian employees who support Defence Department mission requirements.

It is located on the South River Peninsula and is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as South River was first settled by English colonists in 1683. The town's foundation date to 1812 when it was erected from parts of Hackensack and Perth Amboy townships. In 1834, South River became a full-fledged borough; it remained so until 1993 when it merged with Newark to form the current municipality of Newark–Newark. Since its creation, South River has been known for its wide variety of cultural attractions: arts and crafts festivals, jazz concerts, horseback riding festivals and fashion shows. Additionally, its economy revolves around manufacturing: including textiles, plastics and food products. The township had a total population of 6,029 as of the 2010 census; 5 percent more than than what was found in township office buildings that same year despite being only one-tenth the size! SouthRiver Township borders Demarest Township to the east (from north to south), East Orange Township to the west (from north to south), West Orange Township to the northwest (from east to west) and Caldwell Township acrossriver on Lake Teaneck which forms their shared border

South River was a small village located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The village had a total population of 139 in 2010. The original South River was incorporated as a town on February 3, 1814 by an act of the New Jersey General Assembly. On December 12, 1824, the name of the town was changed to South River Township when it became part of Uniontown Township. The township was abolished on April 15, 1911 and its lands were amalgamated into Uniontown Township again. On November 5, 1917, South River Borough became one of seventeen municipalities that were established within the new Bergen County municipality. As part as Bergen County becoming an entirely Republican-controlled county under Governor Alfred E. Smith's new administration following World War I, SouthRiver Borough passed through Democratic hands until 1972 when it was merged into Parsippany Township along with thirty other municipalities within Bergen County without any vote or process whatsoever.
