The first slaveholders in South Plainfield were Nicholas Greaves and his wife, Esther. Nicholas had been born in Northampton County, England, in 1636 and arrived in America in 1640. He married Esther on April 6, 1660, and they lived on the farm that he acquired from the estate of Sir John Carteret. In 1709, Abraham Stroud bought a small piece of land north of South Plainfield from Nicholas Greaves. Abraham became the first white settler in South Plainfield. In 1712, he built a house on what is now known as West Road. He also purchased some land east of South Plainfield from Thomas Hooker and others. These purchases made him one of the largest landowners in town at that time. In 1714-1716, Abraham Stroud killed two Native Americans near what is now town center after learning they were taking food away from his settlers for their own use. This event is often considered to be the beginning of warfare between white settlers and Native Americans in South Plainfield.
