South Plainfield is considered to be part of the Camden-Ewing metropolitan area. The town was formed on May 12th, 1814 from parts of West Plains and Easton Township. It took its name from a nearby stream called "Pine Bush" which was first named by English colonists for the long grass near their farms in what is now Mount Lebanon Township and West Plains Township. South Plainfield has since undergone many changes over time including becoming an incorporated municipality on April 5th, 1911; undergoing a series of name changes through most of the 20th century; becoming part of Camden County on December 30th, 1974; again becoming an incorporated municipality on October 25th, 1990; and finally reverting back to its original name effective November 1st of that year. A number of businesses have been located in South Plainfield over the years including: Coca Cola Bottling Company (1897), Bethlehem Steel (1921), PNC Bank (1984), JCPenney (2006) and Macy's Department Store (2007). In recent years there has been discussion about opening a South Plainfield Mall which would include a variety of retail stores as well as apartments and condos. In addition to these businesses there are also several churches and schools located in South Plainfield such as Episcopal Church (founded 1755), Saint Peters Protestant School District #1-South Plainfield Middle School (established 1892), Mount Lebanon Presbyterian Church & Bible Institute #2(1899), First Baptist Church(1910) and Holy Cross Catholic Parish(1973). South Plainfield is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. The name "South Plainfield" is derived from the occupation of landowning families crops and raising livestock there for their own use. It started as a small village on the east side of the Monmouth River until 1836 when it became part of Hunterdon County. In 1876, it was merged with Plainsboro to form what is now known as South Plainfield Township. The first permanent settler in what would become South Plainfield was Abram French in 1664. He built a house on Main Street and named his home "Bois Blanc." French also carried out some farming operations here; he raised hay, potatoes, corn and other vegetables for himself and his family. By 1702, there were six white residents living in South Plainfield Village; by 1720 there were eleven settlers here. In 1836, during the great migration of American Indians led by General Anthony Wayne into America, many farmers decided to move westward into this new country including Abram French and others who had already established themselves along the Delaware River valley beyond Princeton Junction (now Uniontown). With few alternatives open to them but to leave their homes behind or face starvation during Major James Morristown's military campaign against Native Americans living near Princeton Junction (and much later under Ulysses S Grant), these farmers formed an alliance and began moving westwards through Hudson Valley towards Pennsylvania via West Jersey – one such group being Abram French's father-in-law John Smith who abandoned his farmstead at Bordentown on May 29th 1836.* south plainFIELD—the place where I am writing this today—was first settled by Abram french on may 29th 1836 according to documents i have found* southplainFIELD has been my hometown since childhood*southplainFIELD was once called bois blanc which means white oak trees because alot of them still grow around here*southplainFIELD used to be very rural until about 1960s when we started getting more people from points east*ever since then things have changed quite a bit so lets take a look at some of our history shall we? back in 1800 when south plainFIELD first got platted it had only 8 residents total however by 1860 it had grown up to 136 residents all told! yes that sounds like alot for just one Township but over time more people moved into south plainFIELD from points east so over time we've evolved quite nicely
The first Europeans to visit the area that is now known as South Plainfield were Dutch farmers in 1624. The first permanent English settlers arrived in 1632, and named the area after Sir George Carteret, 3rd Baronet. The early colonial period was a time of great growth for South Plainfield because it was close to both Newark and Philadelphia. In 1701, the Township of South Plainfield was organized out of parts of Middlesex County. By 1763, the Township had grown to encompass all of Sussex County. On July 1, 1831, South Plainfield became a part of Union County when New Jersey was created from parts of Pennsylvania. In 1849, a group of wealthy investors bought land at Easton and West Pike Streets in what is now West Brunswick Township and founded the township's first school - Dickinson School.
