The South Plainfield Rifle and Pistol Club, Inc. was formed in 1907 by a group of friends who were interested in preserving New Jersey’s military history. The club operated out of the old barracks on Cherry Hill Road until 1925 when it moved to its present location on Bell Street in South Plainfield. The club has held several annual events, including the rifle competition at Camp Perry in Erie County, Pennsylvania, since 1916. In 1957 the club inaugurated an event that is still considered one of the most important in club history-the pistol competition at Fort Monmouth National Monument. This event helped initiate a new era for theclub and has become an annual tradition for members and visitors alike.

South Plainfield is a town in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,569 at the 2010 census. South Plainfield is located along the Susquehanna River, north of Paterson and east of Trenton. The town was founded in 1789 by British colonists as "Pine Bush", and named for Colonel John South (1685-1752), who served as military governor of New Jersey from 1723 to 1727. The first settler in what is now South Plainfield was James Weems (1749-1815) and his family. Weems built a cabin on the present site of Main Street in 1792. The first store in town was opened by Isaac Sanger on Orange Avenue in 1802. In 1814, William Haddon purchased land east of Main Street from Nicholas Cohan for $2 million dollars. This made Haddon the founder and first owner of Haddon Township which surrounds South Plainfield today. In 1834, Nahum Brown patented an area comprising what is now South Plainfield and neighboring Hackensack Township; this became known as Browns Mills because brown coal was then being mined thereabouts. Browns Mills grew rapidly due to its location near several large water mills that produced flour, soapstone, bricks and other products for local consumption or export. By 1840, it had a schoolhouse (built 1831), three stores (all built before 1850), five homes (three built before 1840), two newspapers - one published weekly until 1895 (!), four blacksmith shops (), two Agricultural Societies (), two religious societies (), six public housing developments () - all built between 1830 and 1860 - twelve churches (); twenty-six schools (); ninety-six businesses (). In 1870s township residents voted to annex part of Passaic County; this annexation created Englewood Township which includes much of what is now North Brunswick Township including most of present day South Plainfield except for some unincorporated areas still within township boundaries today: these include Northumberland Park (), Monmouth Heights ())(), Edison ()()())
The army has always been a significant part of the United States and its citizens. The first American military units were raised in 1775, during the Revolutionary War. The Continental Army was disbanded in 1783 after the Treaty of Paris ended the war. The Second Continental Congress created the United States Military Academy to train future generals and admirals in 1795. The academy was closed in 1802 after only one year of operation. In 1861, Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter, resulting in the Civil War. After the war, members of both sides were drafted into service and many soldiers died due to disease or combat. In 1919, President Wilson signed an executive order which established a peacetime National Guard system to support government operations while reserving rights for state militias to fight on their own behalf. The National Guard is still present today and plays a significant role in American society.

South Plainfield, New Jersey is a town located in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 26,473 at the 2010 census. South Plainfield was first settled in 1740 by English colonists who named it after the plain where they believed their ancestors had landed. The town was incorporated as a borough on November 2, 1868. On May 25, 1974, South Plainfield and East Brunswick were merged to form a new municipality known as "South Plainfield Township". The history of South Plainfield goes back to 1740 when English colonists arrived in what is now Bergen County. They named the areaplain because they thought their ancestors had landed there. In fact, some believe that the original settlers may have been Native Americans who name-checked this location as part of an initiation rite into society. In 1868, South Plainfield incorporated as a borough due to heavy growth in its surroundings following the opening of the Passaic River Tunnels and other transportation advancements during that decade. At first glance, it seems that little has changed since then - though this could not be further from the truth! Over time, many important facets of South Plainfield’s culture and history have come about due to various factors such as economic development (the area has seen significant growth in recent years), political stability and activism on behalf of its residents. For example: In 1974 – just four years after incorporation – south plainFIELD township became one of only two municipalities in Bergen County to approve a charter amendment allowing for more than 10% racial diversity among their residents! This milestone represented great strides forward for South Plainfield; prior to this point all municipalities within Bergen County were all white-only! Additionally notable achievements include becoming one of only two municipalities in New Jersey (along with Teaneck) to adopt “rightto work” legislation (this law allows employees working for private companies without unions representation) ; successfully opposing efforts by Mayor Torres de la Hoya to ban any public performances by artists other than classical or jazz bands at local high schools; unanimously approving resolutions condemning housing discrimination and bigotry both nationally and locally; spearheading successful protests against several high school tuition hikes before eventually prevailing; and leading numerous community initiatives such as our annual Pumpkinfest which features creative programming ANDY SCHWARTZ PHOTO/Getty Images
South Plainfield was founded in 1764 by George Washington as a small settlement on the Susquehanna River. The town was renamed Plainfield in 1838, after theplain that lay to the south of it. In 1881, Plainfield became part of Paterson Township and in 1912, it became a part of Bergen County.
