Somerville, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was formed from portions of Franklin Township and West Orange Township on July 1, 1848. The first settler was Amos Bissell. The name Somerville comes from the Dutch word "soom" meaning "a place to sleep". At that time there were no streets or towns in Somerville. On July 1, 1849, parts of Franklin Township and West Orange Township were merged into the new township of Somerville. The first post office in Somerville was established on April 14, 1850 by George Hildreth as "Franklin Station". In 1852 it became known as "Somersville", after John Somers who donated land for the station. On November 17th of that year mail arrived from Boston via horse and buggy to the new post office which had been built by James Aiken on what is now Court Street near Amherst Avenue outside of town limits (now called State College Boulevard). On October 16th 1870 residents petitioned for incorporation which they did on December 12th 1870 with a meeting held at the Hotel Griggs located then at 301 Ludlow Street in present-day Holmesburg Borough. The first supervisor was Abram Jukes who served until 1872 when he moved to Yorktown Heights where he served until his death in 1893; also superintended during this time were Moses Brown and Hiram Sprague Sr.. On January 10th 1871 an act providing for municipal government passed through both houses of the NJ Legislature and became effective upon signature by Governor Robert Stanislausrabid and published in the Trenton Times on January 11st . James Pugh soon took over as supervisor with Sprague acting as vice-supervisor from February 7th until May 15th 1870 when Pugh resigned to take up a position with Rutgers University – Newark campus which he would continue to serve for 31 years until his retirement on October 2nd 1926. Somerville is a town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,898. The town was founded in 1741 by English colonists as part of the Morris and Essex colony. It was incorporated as a borough on May 10, 1834. In 1849, Somerville became the first township in Middlesex County to be established withoutensus vote. On July 1, 1868, Somerville became an independent municipality with its own government and school board. The borough was merged into Somerville Township on April 15th of that year. The township has since been dissolved and its residents have moved to nearby Woodbridge Township. The town's namesake is Samuel Morse who invented the Morse Code in 1837 while living in neighboring Middletown. The present-day Morse Museum & Library is located within the limits of what once were Somerville's three wards: North Ward (north of I-95), South Ward (south of I-95), and West Ward (west of I-95). The museum opened in 1984 and contains artifacts from both Morristown and Somerville dating back to before 1800 AD
