Somerville, New Jersey is a town located in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,811 at the 2010 census. As of the Census Bureau's estimate for 2017, Somerville had a total area of 11.9 square miles (27 km²), compared to the township's 12.1 square miles (29 km²). The earliest known reference to the settlement in present day Somerville came from 1695 when Nicholas Cardigan noted that there were people living on the banks of Raritan River "at a place called Sommersly". In 1721 John Woolridge built his first house in what is now Somerville.Exactly one hundred and fifty years later, on October 15th 1852, Isaac Taft purchased land east of what is now Elmira Road and north of US 1 for $5 which he planned to develop into a town site.Taft named his new town after George Washington – Mount Vernon – but it was not until 1875 that the first courthouse was erected in Somerville Township and the first school was built in nearby Easton Township.In 1892-93 electricity became available to residents of Somerville through an Edison company line extending from Newark via Morristown A post office called Sommersly has been established in Somerville since 1872; it served as both a mailing center for local residents and as an appendix to The Newark Evening News during its early years as an afternoon paper published by The Associated Press from Newark’s Public Library complex on Market Street. The name “Somersly” originated with William Somers who settled nearpresent day Uniondale before1832 adjacent to modern day South Orange In 1886 James Fenton bought 350 acres (15 ha) southwest of present-day West Orange along Route 9B from Samuel Morse & Alfred Vail Jr., sons of Samuel Morse Sr.. Somerville is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. The first white person to reside in Somerville was Gideon Greenough who located there in 1795. The first school in Somerville was built in 1817 and the first post office was established on July 1, 1818. After being annexed by Newark in 1834, Somerville had its own Mayor from 1835 to 1840 and from 1850 to 1860; as well as its own Board of Education until it merged with Newark's School District on February 3, 1925. In 1917, Ironbound Bridge which crossed the Hackensack River became the first motor vehicle bridge across that river within Somerville limits since Designated Road Bridge opened at that location on May 4th of that year. In 1922, a group of citizens banded together to build a new high school for their community which would serve students from all over Middlesex County including those living near Princeton and Easton. The new high school replaced one that had been built just east of present-day Somerville along what is now Brookline Avenue; it opened on September 6th of that year and served students from Somerville through 1959 when it closed due to lack of enrollment after World War II ended and farms were taken over by government/military forces who used them as housing projects subsequent to war efforts such as building Fort Monmouth Naval Militia Base nearby during WW2 After years of planning by various groups including the Borough President’s Committee chaired by civic leader John A Kapp (1918-1920) and others local businessmen led by Maurice Fenton (1925-1928), construction began on what are now known as “The Square” – bounded north by Market Street between First and Second avenues – on March 5th, 1929 following Astoria Park’s dedication two weeks earlier adjacent to where current Edison Place meets First avenue This $3 million project included four acres (1 km²) south of present-day Old Forge Road between Third and Fourth avenues – later renamed GrandVIEW Drive – for public recreation purposes; six acres (2 km²) west ofpresent-day Northgate Avenue between Fifth and Sixth avenues for commercial development; five acres (2 km²) north sideofpresent-day Harrison Avenue between Seventh streetdowntown Atholapean Plaza shopping center parking lot for employees only; three acres (1 km²) eastsideof present day Livingston Avenue between Eighth streetDowntown Atholapean Plaza shopping center garage lot also served as an athletic field while still utilized today for vehicular traffic Saturdays before Memorial Day Weekend football games involving West Essex Hills High School have been played here since 1957Additionally his home at 8 South Randolph Street remains An iconic structure not only because it once housed both his sonorous voice mail system operated out front until he retired after many years... but also because it has been used both as an event space - such as hosting weddings or other types VenuesUPnorth featuring live music - Upstate NY's Largest Gay Dance Party every Saturday night beginning at 9pm since 2000 finally ending about an hour or so ago after almost 20 hours...."
