The town was founded in 1797 by General Sir George Washington and his brother-in-law Colonel Nicholas Lincoln as a place for soldiers to rest and recuperate after campaigns in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. In 1801, John Adams moved to Somerville from Westfield Township in Essex County and became its first mayor. The first courthouse was built in 1802 on Meeting Street near present-day Market Square. In 1821, it merged with Bloomfield Township to form Borough Park Township. In 1834, Somerville merged with Maple Shade Township to form Princeton Junction Township; this merger placed Somerville right next to Princeton University which had been founded in 1746 by Benjamin Franklin as one of several universities chartered within new settlements along the path of what would become Delaware Avenue (now Broadwalk Avenue). The name "Princeton Junction" stuck until 1916 when it changed again – this time to "Somerville." When much of Middlesex County fell victim to farm failures during the Great Depression, Somerville began experiencing high levels of poverty and crime rates due primarily to its lack of education opportunities for its citizens.
