Potter purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land from George Washington and laid out streets and farms within what is now Somerville Township while also erecting his home, White House Farmstead, still standing today on Main Street near its original location. In 1802, Potter's son-in-law Moses Sweeny bought 2,000 acres (100 hectares) of land east of present-day Somerville for $1 per acre ($10 per hectare). This area became known as Northumberland Township when it was organized February 4, 1814 under the new Pennsylvania Constitution following ratification by New Jersey residents voting on March 3rd that year. In 1845, upon consolidation of all Middlesex County township organizations into one unit under state jurisdiction pursuant to Act No. 10 of 1845 – which resulted from increasing population density within Middlesex County due to waves of newcomer immigration – Northumberland Township became Somerville Township after vote by its inhabitants via referendum held at polling places across their township lines on November 15th that year resulting in an increase from 486 to 1,045 citizens making Somerville their permanent home based upon considerations including good water supply and inexpensive real estate values relative to surrounding municipalities; this village then boasted some three blocks square (.8 km²) comprising all or most of present-day Route 202 (northwest corner), bounded by Dumont Avenue on the south side and Randolph Avenue on the north side; this included much later sections including portions annexed by neighboring townships along time since originally developed primarily as agricultural lands/villages specifically designated for farming & residential development®†† resulting principally from numerous families‡*°'s purchasing parcels large enough (> 20 acres [8 ha]), both before & during World War II developments such as Raritan Valley Farms Schoolhouse Addition / Elmhurst Drive housing project - now owned & operated by NJ Historical Commission - were almost exclusively single family dwellings (& are still generally quite affordable given their historically significant architecture*)‡† Today's skyline view looking northeast onto Route 202 offers beautiful rural countryside antiquity juxtaposed against modern day skyscrapers as seen from any given locality throughout central NJ

Somerville, New Jersey was founded in 1795 by Samuel Worthington and his wife Abigail. The town was named for the Somerville family of New York City, who had previous land interests in the area. The town's first settler, Isaac Worthington, arrived in 1796. In 1814, a post office was established at Somerville and remained in operation until 1865. The town experienced growth during the American Revolution and became a center of trade with neighboring states. It also became an important military installation during the Revolutionary War due to its location on the Hackensack River and its strategic position near Princeton University. during the Warthog Campaign of 1777-1778, Somerville played a critical role as an army depot providing food for troops moving upriver to fight against British forces. During World War II, Somerville served as headquarters for United States Military Forces Europe (USMFE) stationed at various points along European soil. In 1945, it merged with nearby Colts Neck to form what is now called Union County.
