Somerville is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,387 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Eppsburg–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Somerville was Nicholas Carleton who arrived on July 24, 1721 and named it "Carleton's Purchase." The first store in Somerville opened on Main Street in 1802. In 1825, the millrace that ran through the town was filled with water from a dam built by George Washington to power his new farm near Princeton. This made Somerville one of the most important communities in central New Jersey because it had access to an important water supply. In 1851, a post office called "Somerville" was established and remained in operation until 1896. In 1872, John Atherton bought land east of present-day Somerville and founded Atherton Farms which became one of the largest farmers in central New Jersey. After years of growth and construction work on his farm - including building a large barn and addition to his house - Atherton died suddenly at age 86 years old on May 15, 1909 at his home located off Willow Road across from Phillips School. In 1932, wife Anna Atherton donated her estate east of present day Somerville (including their home) to Rutgers University for use as a research lab for agricultural extension classes teaching students about agriculture and horticulture; this property remains today known as Robert Wood Johnson University Park>. One year later (1933), Rutgers moved its main research campus from Newark to Camden due to financial difficulties caused by World War II; however, Rutgers kept its agricultural Extension school here until 1957 when it closed down due to budget cuts (). After Rutgers' closure (), Somerville experienced rapid growth as multiple businesses started up: Jack Dempsey's Bar & Grill (now known as Joe's), First National Bank (now Barclays Bank), Gussie's Garden Grocery Store (now Checkers), The Paper Mill Inn (later renamed Bedminster Village Center), Danvers Lawn Mower Co., Inc., Poppyseed Bakery (& Cafe) and many more... these businesses helped support local commerce during the decades following Rutgers' closure. Additionally, several schools were founded or expanded here such as Paramus Catholic High School which became Paramus Borough High School after annexation by Paramus Township; then Stroudsburg Area Community College which merged into nearby Stroudsburg University after opening its doors ; then Ridgeway Middle School which became Ridgeway Township Middle School after annexing neighboring Pleasantville; finally Eastwick Intermediate School which currently serves students from both Pleasantville and Ridgeway Township.. In recent years there have been efforts underway by various organizations such as Riverfront Times that seek to protect or revive some of these older businesses within SOMERVILLE while also creating new economic opportunities for residents.; however all attempts so far seem fruitless given current community conditions.. Today somervilles are full time professionals with children working outside the home while others continue living close enough/able to provide care for elderly parents or siblings etc... locals still enjoy spending time outside playing golf or fishing... baseball games take place during summer months either at Pascack Hills Golf Course next door or at Bricktown Ballpark just west of town... soccer games are played throughout SUMMER months whenever there's an available field... hockey games happen usually around November when temperatures start getting cool again :)

Somerville was founded in 1777 by Dutch colonists as a small town on the Delaware River. After the Revolutionary War, Somerville became part of New Jersey. The town had a population of about 14,000 in 1821 and it peaked at about 21,500 in 1881. However, with the advent of World War I and the Great Depression, Somerville’s population dwindled to 6,000 by 1941. It lost its status as a township after 1981 and has since been mostly an unincorporated community. The first settler in Somerville was Johannes Helderberg who named the place for his home town of Rotterdam, Netherlands. In 1777 Helderberg married Sara Houtman from Engeland and they moved to Somerville together. The couple soon had four children: Pieter (1778-1851), Anna (1780-1844), Jacobus (1784-1859) and Sara Elisabeth (1800-1873). Pieter died young while serving in the American Revolution but Anna survived to become a womanoforderesse or matron of sorts at the local college where she taught until her death in 1851. In 1821 Somerville had a population of about 14,000 people living in ten buildings that included two stores and two taverns on Market Street between Pearl Street and High Street. There were also some 25 agricultural acres located within close proximity to the village proper including gardens used for growing flowers such as verbena or chrysanthemums; dairy cows milked here; pigs rooting around near potatoes dug up during plowing season; hogs rooting around near chickens coops; alligator ponds stocked with fresh fish; apple trees grown wild hereabouts along with grapeseed planted when land became available elsewhere nearby; blackberry bushes/bushes worked primarily during late winter when berries were highest quality yieldingibles; chestnuts trees were grafted onto this tree stock early on so chestnut production could continue into later years even though it yielded less fruit than other varieties grown hereabouts due to lack of cold hardiness requirements for those trees.; humble beginnings according to one historian writing about this period In 1861 Abraham Hecker bought much of what is now known as Hecker's Row from John Mahoney which extended from Market Street eastward across High Street cornering Pearl Streets southern border - creating what is now known as Hecker's Row North which today remains part of downtown Somerville almost 150 years later with no indication whatsoever that it once belonged anywhere else! ThisPurchase sets off quite an eventful year for all involved - especially given that Abraham Hecker himself would not live to see it completed!: On January 3rd 1861 Abraham hecker walked down Main street towards our present day building fronting Bridgeport Avenue where he purchased 2 lots No 11A & 11B from Michael Kappelman @ $60 each!! For what seemed like only $2 per acre these 2 parcels would eventually contain over 1/4acre+ worth OF DEAD PASTURE TO BUILD ON!!! And we did just that - building what would become one OF THE FINEST BUSINESSES IN DOWNTOWN SOMERVILLE! What an amazing accomplishment back then!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The first permanent settler in Somerville was Nicholas Douglass, who arrived in 1764. He and his wife, Sarah, founded a small farm on the present-day site of what is now Union Street and Broadway. The Douglases were among the earliest settlers to establish a permanent community in Somerville. In 1814, they erected the first log cabin in what is now Somerville. Over time, other families also came to live in Somerville, including the Kents, the Wellesleys, and the McCormacks.
