The Somerville Regiment of the New Jersey National Guard was first organized in 1777. The regiment served with distinction during the Revolutionary War, including engagements at Saratoga and Yorktown. In 1803, the regiment was disbanded and its members were reorganized as the Somerville Regiment of Militia. The Somerville Regiment now serves as a unit in the New Jersey Army National Guard. The first national guard unit in Somerville was organized on November 9, 1777. It was called the "Somerville Regiment of Militia". The unit served for about a year before being disbanded on December 12th due to lack of volunteers. The unit was reactivated on January 3rd, 1778 under command of Colonel John Kneeland from Newark. The regiment served until September 8th when it was disbanded again due to lack of Volunteers or equipment. On April 24th, 1803, Colonel Amos Chandler ordered the organization of a new battalion within the militia regiment under mycommand name & number Charles Bickford 1st Battalion (F) 2nd Brigade (Pvt.) Somerville, New Jersey is a city in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 76,811 at the 2010 census. It is the seventh-largest city in Camden County and the second-largest city on the South Side of Philadelphia after Philadelphia. Somerville is also home to several smaller villages and towns. The first European settlement in what is now Somerville was made by English colonists who arrived there in 1684 as part of a larger effort to establish a colony in present-day Pennsylvania.
