The Somerville Air Force Base Gift History began in the early 1940s when the United StatesAAF, predecessor of the USAF, was established. The base was first called "Somerville Municipal Airport" and then "New Newark Municipal Airport". In 1942, the USAAF moved its headquarters from New York City to Somerville and it was renamed "Somerville Air Force Base". In 1945, the USAAF activated overseas units at Somerville AFB and these were redesignated as Groups (Air Forces). The Group Headquarters became Headquarters United States Air Forces Europe (USAFE) which is now part of NATO. In 1948, two Squadrons were activated at Somerville AFB - 254th Fighter Squadron and 255th Fighter Squadron. These squadrons were redesignated as wings with a squadron commander reporting directly to Wing Commander. On 1 January 1949, wing headquarters became an operational unit with 3d Tactical Airlift Wing as its subordinate unit. In 1951-1952 three more Squadrons were activated - 269th Bombardment Squadron (later 271st Bombardment Squadron), 292nd Troop Carrier Squadron (later 293rd Troop Carrier Squadron) and 309th Interceptor Squadron (later 310th Interceptor Squadron). On 15 October 1951activated at RAF Mildenhall England was HQ USAF European Command's interceptors squadron which had been detached from Ninth Air Force to serve under Army/Navy escort duty until relieved by Eighth Air Force on 9 November 1952 effective 30 October 1952. From 1 July 1954 until 7 September 1957 all fighter squadrons except for one - 263d Fighter Group flew F-86 Sabres however on 1 July 1954263d Fighter Group re-equipped with Republic F-105Cs while assigned to VIII Bomber Command Effective 10 September 1957 detachment of 262d Fighter Group ended withactivation of that unit effective 27 August 1958 In 1960 two groups formed at Somerville AFB: 514th Missile Wing and 602d Rocket Launcher Wing. Both groups converted to Tactical missiles in 1962 but never deployed due to politics within USAFE caused by McNamara's military policy changes known as The John Birch Society run amok

Somerville, New Jersey is a small town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 8,681 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest of the five municipalities in Middlesex County. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Area and its ZIP code is 07102. Somerville was founded in 1837 by English Immigrants who arrived on HMS "Belinda" from London. The name "Somerville" comes from this settlement's location at a crossing of two rivers: the Somer River and Hackensack River. The first residents of Somerville were Congregationalists who came overland from England in 1837 and early 1840s. They built several homes on what would become Somerville Road near present-day Spring Street. In 1847, a group of Baptists settled here and organized as the First Baptist Church (later named Episcopal) which lasted until 1865 when it merged with another Baptist church to form Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church (now known as Christ United Methodist). The first school in Somerville was built on land donated by Rev. Abel Hammond in 1838 and opened for instruction in November 1840 under the name Prairie School House. In 1865, The Presbyterian church bought land adjoining Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church for use as a theological seminary which they called Princeton Seminary; but it closed after only one year due to financial difficulties. In 1893, both churches merged into one body to form Christ United Methodist Episcopal Church again with additions including an addition to the west side of Spring Street which became known as Park Avenue; however this merger too failed to achieve real success because there were many competing denominations among those founding members of that new organization which had little commonality other than their denominational affiliation

Somerville is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 11,811. Somerville was founded on July 1, 1814 by Captain John Williams and his men after they left Newark for resistor war service in Canada. The original town site was on the north bank of the Raritan River northwest of where it now stands. On December 12, 1815, Somerville became an independent municipality under the name of Secaucus Junction due to its proximity to Secaucus and Hackensack Airport. On October 15, 1898, Somerville became part of Bergen County when that county was created from parts of Essex and Hudson counties. The borough remained within Bergen County until June 30th, 2002 when it became a part of New Jersey’s new state as part of the Bayonne/Hudson Valley region. In 2006, Somerville annexed portions of Rahway Township which made it one-third ethnically African American for the first time in NJ history; this annexation also increased its population to 11,811 people as a result. The borough is located near Morristown and Ridgewood Cemetery on Route 912 east-northeast (the former alignment of Ulysses S Grant Boulevard). It borders Kearny Township to the south; Branchburg Borough to the west; Union City to the north; South Amboy Township to the east; and Englewood Cliffs Borough (northwest)
The area now known as Somerville was first settled by English colonists in the early 17th century. In 1676, the town of Somerville was established as a result of a land grant from Sir John Kirke. The settlement quickly became a small village, and in 1801 it was incorporated as a borough. The town experienced growth during the 19th century, and by 1860 it had reached its current size. During World War II, Somerville played an important role in the Battle of Ramstein airfield. The town received damage due to bombing raids which took place during that conflict. As a result, Somerville has been named one of the " illustration cities" of post-war Europe. It also has rich military history dating back to its days as headquarters for the Third Reich's Kriegsmarine forces.
