Coffee was first brewed in the town of Somers Point, New Jersey in 1784 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. The first coffee beans were grown on the island of Barbados. Coffee beans were brought to North America by Gerard Douglass and slaves who roasted them on their plantations. The Dutch colony of New Netherland produced some of the earliest coffee beans. In 1664, John Winthrop, Governor of the Colony, imported a cargo of coffee from Holland that he roasted himself at his own plantation in present-day Newark, Delaware. The Dutch word for coffee was koffie which became English Kaffe (coffee). In 1784, Nicholas-Jacques Conte opened a small shop in what is now known as Somerset County and started selling ground coffee. He used two large grinders which he bought from a French trader named Mouton. He also purchased two types of brewing vessels: one with a conical shape and another with an oval shape. These vessels were used to make either black or light roasts according to how strong the caffeine desired was. Somers Point is a small town in New Jersey. It is located on the southeastern corner of Monmouth County and Ocean County, about 8 miles (13 km) south of Neptune Beach and 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Asbury Park. Somers Point's population was 5,792 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Somers Point were Dutch colonists who founded a trading post there in 1664. The area that would become Somers Point was originally inhabited by Lenape Native Americans. In 1714, some English settlers from Rhode Island arrived and built a wharf on the Monmouth River near what is now North Street. They named the site after their then-mentor, Sir John Norcross of Wokingham, England. The English built a series of homes here until they withdrew from New Jersey in 1778 following the British Invasion of America. In 1802, James Totten purchased land at what is now East Beach Road for $2 per acre (0.86 ha). He set out to develop it into an agricultural center with markets for produce and meat products as well as housing for workers he imagined would soon be needed to improve his new colony’s infrastructure such as roads, bridges, water supplies and schools. Totten's dream never came true but his rocky start led him to become one of Atlantic City’s most successful businessmen – he built more than 100 homes here between 1802 and 1876 before selling all but 10 to buyers across the United States during its heyday as an industrial center fueled by shipbuilding and other maritime activities that generated jobs throughout much of the 19th century A single groupavid family controlled much of this economy until it crashed during prohibition; members used their wealth to buy up assets including businesses that had nothing whatsoever to do with alcoholic beverages." In 1870–71, construction began on what would become known as "The Battery" or simply "Somers Point". This tall Federal-style brick building served as both local courthouse and jail from 1871 until 1963 when it was replaced by modern facilities adjacent to current day North Street/East Beach Road intersection
