Somers Point is a town located in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,653 at the 2010 census. Somers Point is part of the Monmouth Junction, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was founded by English colonists in 1664 as a small community on the north coast of Long Island. The area now known as Somers Point was first settled by Europeans in 1664 when they arrived from England on Long Island to found new land after their unsuccessful attempt to establish a colony on Manhattan island. The town's name comes from John Somers, one of the original white settlers of Long Island who purchased and built what is now known as Somers Point House in 1664. In 1783, during the American Revolutionary War, Captain James Moore and his men landed at Sandy Hook and fought against British forces under General George Washington near present-day Mount Pleasant Township. In 1868, construction began on Interstate 95 which crossed through Ocean County from Camden to Neptune before terminating at Garden State Parkway east of Paramus. For many years the only way into or out of Somers Point was by boat; however this soon changed with the opening of Route 9 Bypass in 1975 which made it possible for motorists to access the town without having to travel through ocean county. Somers Point is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 9,711. Somers Point was founded on September 11th, 1764 by colonists from Staten Island and has been home to many prominent people throughout its history including John D. Rockefeller and Cornelius Vanderbilt. The borough was incorporated as a town on April 14th, 1854. On July 1st of that year, the towns of Emerson and Pleasantville were combined into Somers Point Township. Today Somers Point is an agricultural township with a small commercial center located at the intersection of Route 22 and Route 914 (the Turnpike). The village also contains two libraries - one public library and one for special needs - as well as a post office vacated in 1984 after being merged with Passaic City. The first settlement at Somers Point was established on September 11th, 1764 by colonists from Staten Island who had arrived there during the British Revolution to escape punishment under English rule. The initial settlers were led by Captain John Nevis who named his new community after himself: "New Dorp". In 1785, George Washington visited the area while on his way to White Sands military base in New Mexico and recommended that further development be made to what would become Somers Point due to its rich natural resources such as coal seams nearby. In 1804 Samuel Morse built his first gristmill in present-day town which helped spur the growth of industry around this time especially in shipbuilding but also led to some decline later on due mainly to competition from inland mills across the river valley. However, despite this decline early industries did contribute significantly to local economy through workers coming here for wages relative to other areas in NJ at that time including Paterson and Camden which were much more rural at that point according To date only 2% of all jobs found here are related directly or indirectly to agriculture however this percentage could rise considerably if we consider today's trends surrounding truck driving/motor vehicle manufacturing etc... Despite these disadvantages industry continued growing nonetheless until 1870 when it became too expensive for farmers outside of Morristown (now West Orange)to compete with larger inland mills having done so since before then thanks largely to railroad subsidies government policies favoring railroads over earlier transportation methods essentially ended traditional farming practices across most parts of America leading some people[...] founder John D."Rockefeller"
