The USS Constitution was the first U.S. Naval vessel to be decommissioned in 1945 and it is now preserved at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in New Hampshire. The Constitution was a floating museum that toured the United States until 1971. It then moved to Somers Point, New Jersey where it still resides today. The USS Constitution served as a flagship of Commodore David Dixon's squadron during the War of 1812 and later participated in several engagements against British warships off Long Island Sound. In 1814, Commodore Dixon's squadron blockaded Quebec City while General James Wilkinson invaded Canada. Commodore Dixon's ship, the USS Constitution, played an important role in this engagement by bombarding British positions on shore before surrendering after two hours of battle. USS Constitution Museum: From Floating Museum to National Monument USS Constitution Museum opened its doors on October 15th, 1971 and from then on it was known as The USS Constitution Museum-Somers Point, NJ! The museum has been hosting events all throughout 2018 for celebrating its 50th anniversary! As part of their celebration they are highlighting some of their most famous artifacts such as a model of HMS Guerriere which sank during World War II (the replica is currently on display at the Essex County Aquarium), models of American warships built between 1794 and 1845 including both frigates and carriers; more than 100 locomotives used by various industries; uniforms worn by sailors onboard American vessels during World War I andWorld War II; additional historical exhibits related to local maritime history such as dockyard conversions; etc! Somers Point is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,611 at the 2010 census. Somers Point is located on the east bank of the Raritan River and on the north side of the river between Kearny and Plainsboro townships. It is part of the Camden-Thornton-Middletown, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Somers Point was Nicholas De Courcy who arrived in 1724 from Ireland. In 1764 John Dunmore granted a charter to establish a merchant society called "Dunmore's Towne" for protection against French pirates that were ravaging British shipping along the coast of New Jersey. The society built a wharf and ferry landing at present day Pier One in 1765, which served as an important transportation link between New York City and Camden County until 1825 when ferries became more efficient using boats powered by steamboats. In 1802 Elisha Weed acquired land west of what is now Pier One and founded Weed's Landing with his wife Deborah Jane Weed (1762-1827). His landed property comprised three square miles (8 km2) including parts of what are now Somers Point Township, Plainfield Township, East Brunswick Township and West Orange Township today. Weed developed this area into one of Hunterdon County's most commercial areas with warehouses, groceries stores, banks and other businesses opening up throughout its history. A thriving fishing community also developed around weed's Landing with raw catch sold directly to local fishermen from ketchups down to catfish! Weed died in 1827 but his widow continued to manage her lands until her death in 1857; during her time they donated over 2 acres (10 ha) to build First Presbyterian Church which stands today on their original land just south of downtown Somers Point giving it its name - "Elisha Weed Park". Afterweed's death his widow bequeathed additional land including much of what is now eastern Livingston Parish - all this land ultimately becoming part of Hunterdon County through legislation passed by Congress during Reconstruction era. When the federal government withdrew its support for Reconstruction following America’s Civil War there was heavy turmoil within New Jersey due largely to factionalism among Republicans – many von Hooge supporters had initially come over under Union banner while others such as Weed had chosen not to cross swords with their former friend/ antagonist Lincoln Grant instead opting for terms negotiated by Secretary Stanton rather than go head-to-head conflictually like their southern Democratic colleagues did – thus allowing for election results voiding any Reconstruction gains made previously . As a result many key political figures from both Republican AND Democrat backgrounds left New Jersey for greener pastures across Illinois or Georgia where political power resided then . In particular influential men such as James Kieft – son-in-lawof George Washington Kieft – moved away making way for Rutgers College football coach Arthur Ashe who would later become Ulysses S Grant’s Vice Presidential running mate during our country’s 6th president’s tenure .. After decades hosting various types events related to local commerce & industry especially during Fourth Of July weekend celebrations & parades many people began asking if there'd be room enough inside Elizabethtown Square next door so they could park their car& come shopping... So finally Hunterspoint townshipudoptedthe motto "All That Is Old May Be Moved Away" & erected new large building adjacentto Elizabethtown Square...
