Somers Point is a small town located in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,391 at the 2010 census. As of the2010 United States Census, it had a total area of 2 square miles (5 km²), including 1 square mile (3 km²) of land and water. Somers Point is bordered by Neptune Township to the north and west, Atlantic City to the south and east, and Neptune Beach to the southeast. The first white settler in Somers Point was Nicholas Pappas who arrived in 1795. He built a cabin on what is now called "Pappas' Hill." In 1824-25 Captain John Stevens landed his ship "Cato" at Sandy Hook on Long Island Sound for goods brought overland fromNew York City. He leased from Nicholas Pappas two lots on which he erected a house known as "The Gables," still standing today. Captain Stevens brought with him many Jewish immigrants from Poland who were among his passengers when he sailed from New York Harbor on October 13th 1824 bound for Sandy Hook Bay with cargo of flour, salt pork and other provisions for soldiers stationed there in relaying American War news back home across Lake George. Accounts differ as to whether or not any Jews disembarked at Sandy Hook but all evidence points to captain Stevens having done so since most of these immigrants could speak English fluently enough to do so without being conspicuous or causing too much suspicion among their fellow passengers! Captain Stevens's vessel was lost while sailing off Staten Island during an autumn gales storm on December 12th 1826 after running aground on rocks near present day Bulls Head Cove; never again seen afloat! The following year Captain John Stevens's nephew Daniel Phillips chartered HMS Erebus under command of Lieutenant Commander James Henson made search for her but no trace was ever found despite numerous attempts! It has been suggested that she may have sunk when hit by another ship while struggling through heavy seas after running into trouble off Staten Island; however this theory has never been confirmed! A group of ten Dutch Reformed missionaries - brothers Cornelius Emmelink, Johan van der Zee and Hendrik de Valk - arrived in Somers Point aboard HMS Bounty On January 24th 1797,, settling also ashore in present day Neptune Beach beside what are now known as "Hendrick's Battery" & "Dutch Fort". They failed to establish themselves permanently apart from their missionary brethren ships which sailed back up river every winter until 1800 when they finally left Greenland behind due to difficulties getting food supplies needed for their religious activities downriver against stiff competition from French traders.- After 1700 most Dutch Protestants had either emigrated or moved away altogether creating large Irish Catholic communities along both sides of the Passaic River where they lived until World War II.- From 1660 until about 1830 Samuele Bordone established himself as a trader at Bear Mountain Creek between Perth Amboy and Dunellen before moving his business upstream along Hunterdon River eventually establishing himself at Somers Point circa 1692/3 His son Giovanni developed tanning operations here beginning around 1710/11 which continued until 1865.-- In 1794 Captain James Cook anchored off shore off North Woolwich beachresting five days carrying out his first round trip circumnavigation of Australia on HMS Resolution resulting in sightingof several new islands including Norfolk Island & Van Diemen’s Land.– Following Cook’s voyage more settlers began arriving via ferries landing at Hackensack Landing then walking or riding overland slowly making their way upriver towards Mount Carmel whence they took boats downstream reaching Somers Point by late July/early August 1794 – By early November some 26 families had settled here including 14 men led by Pastor Abraham Smith who already owned land nearby.– In 1802 Reverend Samuel Morse set up shop here selling postcards direct from Philadelphia.— By 1840 there were over 100 businesses active along Route 128 totaling 4500 employees—- By 1850 there were only 10 businesses remaining with 5000 employees…and just 3 residents living within limits

The town was named for General John Somers who fought in the Revolutionary War and later served as the first Mayor of Camden. In 1834, a company of Marines called the Second Camden Marine Regiment was stationed at Somers Point and played an important role in repelling American Indian attacks. The town also became known for its annual lobster festival which is still celebrated to this day. However, by 1840, Somers Point had fallen into decline due to factors such as overpopulation and lack of economic opportunities. However, it did not go away completely- over time, residents began to move out and new businesses were established in the area. In 1976, Somers Point was annexed by Camden and became part of the city proper. Today, it remains a vibrant community with many active businesses and organizations that continue to make contributions to local culture and history.
The Somers Point Plantation was a plantation in New Jersey that was founded by Nicholas Somers and his wife, Anne. The Somers Point Plantation was located in the town of Somerset, New Jersey. The plantation was active until 1828 when it became part of the United States Government following the Treaty of Paris which ended the Revolutionary War.
