Somers Point is a small town located in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. Somers Point is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Somers Point were French traders who arrived there in 1675 and 1676. They named it "Port Royal," after the English settlement of Jamestown in Virginia, which they had visited two years earlier. The first permanent European settlers were Dutch colonists who moved from Rotterdam to this area in 1714. The name "Somers Point" was given to the peninsula by Captain John Smith of HMS Discovery when he reached this point on his voyage from England to North America in 1727. The town was founded as a Loyalist community during the American Revolution because many residents fear British occupation and attack if their homes were captured or burned by the British forces during that time period. The original village consisted of about 100 houses and 12 stores built between 1777 and 1800 on an artificial peninsula formed by dredging a channel through the tidal flats near present-day Warrenton Beach. Afterward, development increased along Route 22 (now Delaware Avenue) towards what is now Jersey Shore Boulevard until development stopped altogether around 1920 due to scarce land and competition from other towns within miles of Jersey Shore for workers during World War One and subsequent years of Prohibition. In 2006, Somers Point became home to one of the world's largest paper recycling facilities when New Paper Manufacturing Company merged with Pennsylvania-based Jiffy Lube Paper Co., creating one of North America's leading paper handling companies and creating more than 1,000 jobs throughout its operations at three locations including Pembroke Township; Smyrna; and West Amboy Township while also continuing its operations at its facility adjacent to NJ State University’s College Park campus where it manufactures new textiles for export Due largely to its maritime history as well as proximity to some worlds' most famous ports such as Newark Liberty International Airport - both now part of Rahway - Somers Point has undergone significant redevelopment over recent decades with several new shopping centers developments (including Elizabethtown Mall), water sports complexes (such as Southsea Yacht Club), high school/college campuses including Dogfish Head Waterfront High School & Atlantic Highlands Collegiate Institute & Ocean View Middle School as well as several apartment towers/condos developments scattered throughout various parts of town making it one of Northeast PA's fastest growing communities

Somers Point, New Jersey is a small town located on the western edge of New Jersey and bordered by Pennsylvania to the north, Delaware to the east, and Atlantic City to the south. The population was 7,848 at the 2010 census. Somers Point is berthing on Lake Monmouth which is a reservoir formed by damming of the Susquehanna River. The community was first settled in 1732 as part of Elizabethtown Township within what is now Morris County. In 1838 it became part of Somerset County. The town was originally named for Nicholas Somers (1695-1768), an Englishman who had arrived in America in 1724 and established himself in Philadelphia before moving westward to Somerset County. After traveling through Maryland and Virginia he reached what is now Somers Point on December 12, 1732. He built a house there and began trading with Native Americans until he died five years later from yellow fever contracted while out West drilling for oil wells). His heirs sold land hereabouts to settlers including John Woolridge (1727-1814) who founded Princeton University in 1837; Isaac Ellsbury (1763-1839); Salmon Pryce (1800-1867); George Hickson (1801-1875), one of three men who cofounded Camden Yards; David Hackett (born 1804), a lawyer turned farmer who served as Mayor of Camden from 1865 - 1880; Abraham Hochschildt (1800-1886), an immigrant from Germany whose family had landed at Weehawken Cove on Long Island in 1664; David Brouncker (1813-1900) who served as Mayor from 1886 - 1893; Julius Neumannson (born 1840) resident physician at local hospital between 1860 - 1870 and 1880 - 1890 before becoming physician general for putative colony at Bridgeport where his son also practiced medicine before dying young); Moses Levythaler proprietor tannery northeast of town beginning about 1800 In 1838 township was divided into two parts: Elizabethtown Township which became known as Perth Amboy due to development there by entrepreneur Peter Cooper[2] while Somers Point remained unincorporated withinElizabethtown Township.[3][4] James Buchanan donated land south of present day Route 33 which becameknown as Vedder's Heights after him while other portions were developed by William Cullen Bryant[5][6] Thomas Edison[7][8], Andrew Carnegie[9], Edward Ayer [10], Commodore Perry,[11][12] Cornelius Vanderbilt [13],[14]} among others. On July 9, 1861 during American Civil War Union army under General Ulysses S Grant advanced into southern New Jersey they encountered Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell near present day Bound Brook received word that Union forces were coming they ordered their artillery barrage upon Confederate positions resulting in heavy losses for Union forces including Captain Samuel Wiggin posthumously awarded Congressional Medal Of Honor for his actions that day
