Secaucus, New Jersey is a town in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,811 at the 2010 census. Secaucus was founded in 1764 as a small settlement on the north bank of Hackensack River. It became an incorporated municipality on February 15, 1846. As of the 2010 United States Census, Secaucus had a population of 23,362. The name "Secaucus" is derived from the Dutch word "seks", meaning "sexual activity". The first settlers who arrived in what is now Secaucus were farmers and their families who came to create a new land claim around 1764 after they discovered grants had been made by George Washington for that area. They named their new settlement "Hackensack," after the Hackensack River which they thought would provide security for their new community. According to legend, during the Revolutionary War one of General Washington's aides found two bundles of cash hidden under some trees near Secaucus and offered it to the townspeople if they could find enough horses to take it back home with them.
