Secaucus is located on the north shore of the Hudson River and is bounded by Secaucus Bay on the east, Clinton Township on the south, and Union City to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, Secaucus had a total area of , of which (or 99.92%) was land and (or 0.08%) was water. As of the census of 2000, there were 20,569 people, 8,912 households, and 5,853 families residing in the township. The population density was 1,844/square mile (649/km²). There were 979 housing units at an average density of 613/sq mi (241/km²). The racial makeup of Secaucus was 96% White alone; 0% African American; 2% Native American; 1% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 0% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 3%. There were 8,, households out of which 36% had children underthe ageof 18 living with them, 57% were married couples living together , 11% had a female householder with no husband present., and 24 % each had a male householder with no wife present. Secaucus, New Jersey is a borough in Hudson County, New York, United States. Secaucus was founded in 1854 by Dutch and English settlers as the village of Orangeburgh on the west bank of the Hackensack River. The community was renamed Secaucus after its incorporation into Hudson County in 1867. It took its name from John Secaucus, a settler and tavern owner who contributed to the growth of the community. Secaucus became an incorporated town in 1909 and again in 1916. The population of Secaucus peaked at 37,814 at the 2000 census; it has since declined to 27,811. In 2013, Secaucus voters passed a resolution establishing a city status for the borough. As of September 2018, there were no plans to re-establish a city government within Secaucus or anywhere else in Hudson County due to low levels of support from residents. The history of Secaucus begins with Dutch settlers who arrived here during the early 1800s seeking new land for themselves and their families. John Secaucus donated 2 acres (0 hectares) east of his tavern on Hackensack River to become what would become Secaucus. At first there were only small enough plots available that could be farmed so this donation wasn't much use but it did set off a seed that would eventually grow into an important industry here - brewing beer using Sachem water - which helped make this area one of the most prosperous villages on Long Island until Prohibition hit in 1920).
The first Europeans to explore and settle in Secaucus were Dutch entrepreneurs, led by Hendrick Barentsz, in 1624. The area was then known as "Hague Township" because of the tidal waves that battered the shore during the frequent storms at that time. The first permanent European settler in Secaucus was Nicholas de Vries, a resident of Rotterdam who built a farm on what is now North Avenue in 1638. By 1675, there were over 20 European settlers living in Secaucus. In 1797, after the Treaty of Utrecht ended the War of Independence between Great Britain and France, General John Burgoyne surrendered New Jersey to British forces at Princeton Lake. At this time, Secaucus became part of York County which was divided into two parts - Burlington County to the east and Middlesex County to the west - withSecaucus located within Burlington County. In 1814-15, when York County was divided into three parts again due to population growth (thanks largely to new immigrants),Secaucus became part of Union Township which included all but one of Essex County's 117 townships (northwest corner being Newark).
