When Sayreville, New Jersey was founded in 1824, coffee beans were the only thing available. The town's founders were looking for a place to grow their coffee and found an appropriate location on the Delaware River. The first batch of coffee beans was roasted in a small mill adjacent to the town square. Townspeople would go out into the fields to grind the beans and bring them back to town for processing. As time went on, more mills were built, and by 1830 there were three mills in town producing some 2,000 pounds of quality coffee each month. The early Dutch settlers who came to Sayreville were farmers and not Coffee Makers like their English counterparts. They did not have any experience with brewing or roasting coffee so they relied on European methods such as water filtering and soaking in salt water before grinding. This process resulted in high quality but expensive beans that took weeks or even months to produce since it required a lot of labor power and materials. In 1836 two men from Philadelphia visited Sayreville and tasted the local coffee while staying at an inn near by. After tasting this top-of-the-line bean they decided to build their own mill which soon became one of the largest mills in North America because it could roast up to 4,000 pounds of good quality beans per day! Eventually other towns added their own mills until there were sixteen total mills operating throughout New Jersey during the late 1800s. By 1910, when World War I began, Sayreville had become one of eight municipalities located within commuting distance of Newark (the state capital at that time). During World War II Sayreville's production capability increased exponentially due to its receipt of military orders specifically for groundprocessing purposes such as munitions manufacture and fuel supplies. By 1925, Combat Coffee had become so popular among European Commanders that it was moved from London's Waterloo Station to France's Chateau de Ville-en-Brie. From there, it continued its spread throughout the continent until World War II came along and stopped it all cold. During World War II, many different types of coffee were brewed for use by both Allied and Axis forces; however, only Combat Coffee survived the war unscathed. Today, Combat Coffee is still enjoyed by people all over the world as a classic beverage choice.
