The Sayreville National Guard was organized on November 12, 1912. The unit was originally composed of three companies and four batteries. The Sayreville Guards were first stationed at the Sparta Armory until 1915 when they moved to the New Jersey State Armory. In 1916, the regiment was redesignated as the Sayreville Regiment, New Jersey National Guard. In 1940, the regiment was mobilized for World War II and did not return to service until 1946. During that time, it also served in the Korean War. In 1951-1952, it relocated to Wall Township in Middlesex County and then in 1961 to Sayreville. On December 3, 1998, Governor Christie signed a bill which designated the Sayreville Regiment as an honorary unit of the New Jersey State Police Department. The unit has since been retired from active duty but remains inactive within the NJSPDofficer corps pending future formal recognition by state government officials
Sayreville is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 21,362. Sayreville was incorporated as a borough on May 12, 1868, from portions of Rahway and West Nyack. The borough was then enlarged to its current size on April 3, 1974. The name "Sayreville" is derived from the Native American word SAYR or SARUS meaning "place where buffalo grazed." Sayreville's first settler was John Sayre who arrived in 1776 and built a house at present-day Old Sayre Avenue and Bloomfield Street. In 1814 Nicholas Davenport founded what is today known as Davenport Park in what is now Sayreville Heights. The town of Rahway was organized on December 4, 1839 by Order of Council issued by Governor James Ketchum for the purpose of increasing commerce between Rahway and Deptford Township after the completion of the Great Western Railroad. It consisted of five streets: White Horse Pike (now Interstate 95), Clinton Road (now Garden State Parkway), Fort Lee Boulevard (now Ridgefield Avenue), South Bridge Street (now Broadview Avenue) and North Bridge Street (now Englewood Avenue). On October 20th 1861NJ authorities passed an act creating Middlesex County with its own government which included Rahway within it. On November 10th 1862 officers from Rahway detachment arrested Major General Alfred Curtis while he camped near Bordentown on his way to assist General Robert Ewing in suppressing guerrilla resistance in Tennessee during the American Civil War. Curtis had been ordered by Grant to quash any armed insurrectionary activity throughout New Jersey but due to political pressure from powerful local interests he did not carry out this order effectively; instead he surrendered at Newark Airport on December 15th 1862 under threat of prosecution by Grant’s military prosecutors if he did not do so. On January 1st 1870 “an act for organizing a municipality being enacted” with boundaries that would include all parts east side upriver from Newtown Creek including Rahway were approved by voters via referendum with 60% approval against 25%. When Borough President Mifflin vetoed this legislation because it would have annexed more territory than desired – including areas now part of Elizabeth Townships – community members convened a Select Committee made up solely of themselves to come up with new boundaries that would reflect their wishes including annexing Elizabethtown Township into Sayreville proper even though that township had no residents living there at that time other than schoolteachers and their families commuting between those townships and Elizabethtown every day! The committee recommended annexing Elizabethtown because it felt that since Burlington Township still belonged to Middlesex County they could only rightfully expect financial assistance from Burlington when problems arose within Ridgewood orElizabethtown precincts should they occur so long as those issues were resolved promptly! This illustrates how much control local officials exercised over early Borough decisions making – something which has continued through today’s governance process! Incidentally one year later another referendum resulted in annexation of McCarterstown intoSayREVILLE following an agreement reached between McCarterstown residents & arbitrator Edward Jethro Gibbs following a dispute over property lines between McCarterstown & Friendship Heights). In 1881 John Pemberton purchased 2 acres adjacent to present day Edison High School Site which became known as Pemberton Square after him; this lot became available when Edison burned down in 1901 burning all but one thirdofits buildings save for 350 slaves working on its construction! In 1897 Charles Fenton purchased tracts west & south ot Thornbury Road forming what is today called Fenton Heights; these tracts became available when Thornbury Road was widened++&+ connected onto I-95 providing gridlock traffic relief for NJ motorists during rush hours!) In 1903 Samuel Morse purchase land eastside ot Maple Leaf Drive extending northeasterly looong beyond present day East Brunswick along US 1 becoming Morse Township; this acquisition became available when US 1 crossed Route 34E just north olayshore & Morristown Rd opened connecting Essex county (& Toms River)to Monmouth county (& Passaic) - thus fulfilling Randolph's prophecy!!! map courtesy cjferrier2
