Sayreville is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. Sayreville is bordered to the north by Sayre Township and to the east by Asbury Park. The first settlers of what would become Sayreville were Dutch Revolutionary War veterans who arrived in 1764. They named their place after Sir George Sayres, 1st Baronet of Devonshire (1702-1764), an English statesman and general during the American Revolution. Colonel John Armstrong settled in what became Sayreville in 1785 and set up a sawmill that still operates today. In 1814, President James K. Polk sent troops to burn down a schoolhouse near Sayreville as part of an effort to suppress Native American uprising against Ulysses S. Grant's occupation of New York City during the Mexican–American War. The burning caused several families to flee and settle in nearby Asbury Park where they founded the village of Asbury Park on March 12, 1815. At its peak, Asbury Park had over 20 stores, four churches (Church of England/Anglican, Methodist Episcopal/Methodist Union, Roman Catholic/Dutch Reformed and Presbyterian), two schools (one medium sized and one large), three breweries and twelve residences; as well as four businesses: two attorneys' offices (the firm of Potter & Potter and Livingston & Barclay), two grocers' stores (the store known as "The Grapes" on Clinton Street) and two tanneries. However by 1830 all this property had beenSold off or absorbed into other villages or towns within Hunterdon County so thatAsbury Park only retained its name until 1918 when it was amalgamated with Rahway into Rahway Township . In 1892 Johnstown Steel Works opened up shop at 9 Depot Road which functioned as both a foundry for producing railroad ties for shipment to Philadelphia markets as well as making steel products such as anchors for ships docked at Jocko's Dock along the Hackensack River before being shipped across country aboard railroads until 1933 when production ended at Johnstown Steel Works due to lack of market demand however some steel products still remaintoday including light fixtures made from cast iron In 1902 Mount Laurel Manufacturing Company started up operations with space located on Bridge Street between Spring Street Westand Arch Streets manufacturing locomotives used by various railway companies throughout America starting with Lackawanna Railway Company& later Penn Central Railroad these locomotives were finally withdrawn from service in 1975 although some are preserved today among other things at Riverfront Museum near Harrisonburg Virginia

By 1850, Sayreville had become one of the most important cities in New Jersey because of its role as an agricultural center and its position as the junction of several major rivers. During World War II, SayREVILLE worked hard to support America's war effort by manufacturing munitions and food products. After the war, the city experienced rapid growth which led to problems such as high housing prices and limited access to education or job opportunities for many residents.
