Sayreville is a small town in Haddonfield Township, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Haddonfield, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2000 Census, Sayreville's racial makeup was 97.7% White and 2.3% African American. Sayreville was chartered as a township on April 12, 1835 by order of Governor John Woolridge. The original town site included present-day Sayreville Heights and Sayreville Creek. The first settler in what would become Sayreville was John Milligan who arrived in 1836 from Ireland with his family and some friends. He built a cabin on the southeast corner of what are now Park Avenue and First Street (). Milligan became an early postmaster and later served as mayor of Sayreville from 1840 to 1845 (). In 1843, Anthony Jourdan settled near the intersection of Fifth and Sixth Streets (). Jourdan operated a gristmill that fed into mills located throughout Camden County until 1865 when he sold it to George Washington Bridge Company president Jeremiah Dixon for $1,000 (). After Dixon's death in 1865, the mill passed through several owners before coming into ownership by John Fenton in 1924 (). Fenton renamed it the Jeremiah Dixon Mill after himself () . The mill continued to produce flour until 1964 when it closed due to financial difficulties (). The mill building still stands within walking distance of today’s village hall complex off Fourth Street ().
