Rutherford is a borough in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The borough was formed from portions of Rahway and South Caldwell on November 4, 1857, by an act of the New Jersey Legislature based on the results of a referendum held that day. The original boundaries were: Rahway to the south, South Caldwell to the north and east, and Rutherford to the west. On February 11, 1872, changes were made to the borough when it became a result of an act entitled "An Act to Incorporate certain Towns in Hunterdon County", which increased its territory by . On December 1st 1984, another change took place when parts of Rahway and North Caldwell were taken into adjoining Borough of Linden. This change also added much-needed land for residential development in Rutherford as well as businesses located along Route 9 including two gas stations and several convenience stores/restaurants. On October 15th 1992 further changes occurred when parts of Rahway were annexed into neighboring Borough of Clifton Township while still remaining within the limits set forth in their respective acts - this annexation marked what has come to be known as "the three Amish annexations". Finally on January 1st 1999 all but 2 acres (0.8 km²)of land within Rutherford proper - home to most residents - was annexed by neighbouring Monmouth Park Township due lack thereof resident votes in favor or against annexation at a special meeting called for that purpose following complaints from some about noise levels emanating from residents living adjacent properties in Monmouth Park Township during school hours (nonexistent zoning regulations allow these types OF noises). In spite of these various boundary changes over time - likely due largely to growing numbers+of people living within its borders +increasing commercial activity taking place therein), Rutherford remains little more than a rural township with few if any developments other than small townships located immediately adjacent thereto; boasting only one public high school (Westlake Academy), one library (+/- four branches), one post office (-/- six mailboxes), one fire department (+/- five engines) and one village hall (+/- four buildings). However given its rural setting & limited infrastructure - coupled with relatively low population density & extremely small number/density of businesses/residential dwellings situated within it - there are many opportunities for community growth & redevelopment should someone wish To take advantage thereof; something that has yetto be seen despite numerous requests from Residents seeking such progress!

Rutherford is located in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and was established in 1756. The town was named for the British physicist and mathematician, Sir John Rutherford, who came to America in 1753. Rutherford's first store was built on High Street in 1758. In 1814, the town had a population of about 1,000 people. In 1866, Rutherford became a borough; it annexed neighboring towns of Allendale andappendage on year later. In 1913, the Borough of Rutherford merged with the surrounding municipalities to form the City of Monmouth Township. The first person born in Rutherford was Philip Ammon (1747-1824). He worked as a cooper at an early age and later moved to Philadelphia where he became a lawyer. Ammon also helped found both Rutgers University (New Brunswick) and American Philosophical Society (Philadelphia). On November 9, 1800, he married Sarah Hennepin (1751-1825), daughter of Pieter Hennepin (1685-1757) and his wife Agnes Van Cortlandt(1689-1764). They had three children: Philipsa Mariana Ammon(1800-1868), John Pierpont Ammon(1801-1872), and Mary Augusta Ammons(1804-1927). In 1808 Nicholas Roosevelt moved from Gloucester County to Monmouth Township with his family after purchasing land there from Joseph Rice Sr.. There were only two families living under one roof then - those living on Main Street opposite Drury Lane public school while all others lived either within walking distance or nearby by horse carriage or wagons drawn by four horses pulled by two mules pulling a cart pulled by four oxen etcetera - so much so that when Nicholas Roosevelts Great grandson bought some additional land near what is now known as Roosevelt Boulevard just east of Route 19 west of I–95 back thenon December 8th 1892 for $620 you could have bought one block long lots today including all roads fronting on Water street which would have been called "Roosevelt Boulevard" today! A day earlier his great grandson Samuel Gridley Roosevelt had added another lot just south of what is now known as FDR Boulevard back thenfor $520 more making it six blocks long lots today! The cost at that time for lots close enough together to walk were only 5 cents apiece however over time distances grew up making these costs even higher! Today real estate prices reflect this period well because communities such as Edison Junction outside Princeton NJ are surrounded by homes costing several million dollars each! Notwithstanding their lack thereof they managed nonetheless to build one or more churches employing ministers during this difficult time - Reverend James Caldwell being an example. Reverend Caldwell started work at Trinity Presbyterian Church #1 on September 10th 1796 having recently come from Pittsfield MA where he served as Minister without any pay until removed pursuant to law due to political unrest shortly before itsestablishment here January 3rd 1800!!! Others active during this tumultuous time include Reverend George Washington Payne pastor extraordinaire services held at home between meetings attended mostly women barefoot & stocking feet attending through closed windows many times totaling around fifty miles round trip sometimes twice weekly averaging around 2 ½ hours total duration seven days per week plus half day off every Saturday – service usually started at 7 PM sharp local Unity common room being used until about 12 midnight when candles lit & sermon began live broadcast thru open window onto public square out front finally finishing up around 5 AM next morning with dinner provided afterwards social dancing proceeded until Midnight most Sundays concluded early since Sabbath’s observance varied greatly among different denominations!!
