The United States Navy has a long and rich history in Rutherford, New Jersey. From its earliest days, the navy was an important part of American society. The navy played a significant role in the War of 1812 and later helped to preserve America’s independence. The Constitution was a wooden ship built by shipbuilder John Wheelock at his shop on Delaware Avenue in what is now Rutherford Township. In 1815, Congress passed an act authorizing construction of HMS Farragut (1801), which would become one of America’s most famous warships. In 1824, Commodore William Howe ordered HMS Guerriere fitted with cannons and made ready for sea patrol off Cape Horn. On November 12, 1824, Guerriere began her patrols off Cape Horn and soon became famous for her successful interception of Spanish ships sailing into Argentine waters without permission from Madrid! In 1827-28, Commodore David Dixon led a squadron against Spanish pirate vessels off Cuba. This action earned him the nickname “America’s Captaincy General” because he successfully suppressed piracy throughout much of South America during this period! After leaving Cuba in 1830 with 400 men under his command, Commodore James Kenedy sailed northeast along latitude 37°30′ N to Key West where he arrived on October 15th 1830 with orders from President Andrew Jackson to suppress piracy on Florida Keys! Kenedy quickly realized that this order was unnecessary since no pirates were present! He returned home via Mobile Bay on November 5th 1830 having accomplished his objective! On December 11th 1830 Commodore Isaac Watts took command of USS Constellation after Captains John Rodgers and James Longstreet were wounded aboard HMS Guerriere while chasing Spanish pirates near Havana harbor

It is the second most populous municipality in Cumberland County after Trenton and it borders Clearwater Township to the north, Clinton Township to the east, Union Township to the south and West Indian Beach Borough to the west.
