Roselle is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,588 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Rose family of West Orange. The first European settlers in what is now Roselle were Dutch colonists who established a trading post there in 1681. The town's present form was established on April 14, 1874 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature as part of the consolidation of Hunterdon and Morris Counties into a single county. As part of that process, Roselle became one of the townships within Morris County. Roselle has been inhabited for over 1,000 years and contains evidence dating back to Pre-Columbian times. There are numerous archeological sites located throughout the town which date back to various periods including Paleo-Indian (approximately 1150–1600 BCE), Archaic (mid-1st century BCE), and Classic (4th century CE). One early settler was Nicholas Van Kempten who arrived in 1701 and built a cabin near where he currently lives on Route 25A. He named his settlement "Van Kempten's Landing" after his brother-in-law Nicholas van der Zande who also settled thereabouts later that year. Another early settler was Pieter Stuyvesant who arrived in 1764 and built a farmstead on what is now State Road 527 east of Roselle Township proper. From this farmstead derive many current street names such as Park Avenue/Stuyvesant Boulevard/Route 25A/New Amsterdam Court Road etc.. Many residents originally hailed from Holland or Belgium but over time many immigrants also came from other parts of Europe including Germany, Italy, Spain and Ireland among others.. Most grains grown here were transported downriver by boatloads; however some fruits such as apples were also produced locally such as peach pits found in Birdie Run Valley near state road 9 west of town center.. Today most businesses are rooted in services rather than agriculture with only two exceptions: one being Edwards Auto Parts which still occupies its original location along park avenue west of Routes 25A & 287; another being PNC Bank which occupies an adjacent building at 302 Union Avenue northwest corner Route 10.. Roselle is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 4,629 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded on April 11, 1795 by General James Grant and Captain John Armstrong as a station on the track between Philadelphia and Camden. The name "Roselle" comes from an Algonquian word meaning "a meadow with wild grapes." The first white settler arrived in 1796 and named his farm "Roselle." The first store opened in 1812. By 1830, Roselle had two churches, five schools, three stores and sixty-six residents. In 1835, the post office was moved to Roselle from Cherry Hill. In 1849, local farmers formed a cooperative to produce crops such as corn and beans for commerce in nearby Camden. They also built a sawmill that produced lumber for buildings in Roselle and other towns along the Delaware River. In 1850–1851, construction began on what would become Roselle's first public schoolhouse which met initial usage in December 1850 when twelve children from Cherry Hill attended classes taught by Mrs. Hagerty (later Mrs. Ayer). Classes continued until May 1853 when they were moved to Beechwood Schoolhouse due to overcrowding at Cherry Hill School; however some students were able to continue attending class through September 1853 because of an agreement reached withPhiladelphia’s Board of Education which allowed for private educational institutions within city limits under certain conditions – these schools operated until 1861 when all public schools were closed due to financial difficulties). In 1870–71 architect George Washington Wharton designed additions including a gymnasium and three library rooms addition thatstrosite today known as the Wharton Annexe inside of what is now Doctor Phillips High School building adjacent to Route 35E across from Independence Hall Park northeast of downtown Philly., . On October 10th 1861 due to Confederate sympathies during the American Civil War many people left their homes & businesses throughout Mercer county just before Union troops marched into town locking down streets preventing any more departures….. most likely around this time roselle may have been without power or telephone service too
