The national guard was first organized in 1776 as a way to protect local residents from possible French Invasion. The first regiment of the national guard was created on November 6th, 1776. The regiment served for six years and then disbanded on January 3rd, 1780. The next year, the state of New Jersey established a National Guard unit to supplement the militia. The unit was initially named the 1st Regiment of Militia but it was renamed the 2nd Regiment of Militia after it participated in a battle at Princeton in February, 1781. The 2nd Regiment served for three years and then disbanded on December 12th, 1783. On July 25th, 1812, New Jersey activated its third regiment of militia and assigned it to serve under Major General James Kempton’s Department of Western Canada as part of brigade XXIV Corps under General Philip Halleck’s command. On October 14th, 1812 Brigade XXIV Corps lost its commander when he fell ill and died at Fort George Augustus near Kingston BC during an engagement against the Canadian forces commanded by Sir John Auld. In 1814 First Lieutenant Colonel Amos Prentice assumed command over the brigade which became known as “the Righteous Brothers” because they refused to surrender at Yorktown Heights following their victory at Battle Of Guilford Courthouse that year. On June 5th Civil War veteran Solomon Northrup donated his horse and wagonloads of clothing and equipment to help rebuild morale among New Jersey’s National Guard units serving in Virginia and Maryland during those early stages of the war. After Union troops captured Petersburg on April 9th 1865 two companies from Captain Edward Sibley’s 1st Battalion (New Jersey) National Guard Infantry were ordered south with orders to garrison Wilmingtonport Naval Yard until relieved by Confederate Forces on May 15th 1865 when all naval yards in Delaware were surrendered including Wilmingtonport Naval Yard where Company F (New Jersey)National Guardsmen remained until relieved by Confederate Forces on September 11th 1865 with orders not to leave till they had razed all remaining cannon aboard shipyards ashore before departing for Norfolk Va.. These events constitute one component within Roselle history that is associated with Roselle being “the quiet town that never raised its voice against abolitionism or slavery” (Galloway). Throughout this time period there were various protests both public and private taking place throughout what is now known as Newark County about how these military installations were being used for purposes other than simply guarding local citizens; such as providing lodging for officers while away from home or conducting training exercises without citizen oversight or accountability which sometimes led directly into civilian unrestrained violence erupting either spontaneously or through planned operations such as sniper shootings across neighborhoods adjacent to military installations resulting in several fatalities including one officer killed outside her home while hiking nearby). These protests included demonstrations outside military installations throughout Roselle culminating with a large peaceful march from Market Place back up Broad Street past Soldiers & Sailors Monument towards Federal Hall nicknamed “March To Centreville” which ended up leading directly into skirmishes between Patriot militiamen garrisoned inside Federal Hall complex surrounded by angry civilians who attempted unsuccessfully twice(but successfully)to storm the building using whatever weapons they could find-both times resulting in injuries sustained by soldiers inside before finally yielding after multiple warning shots being fired by federal marshals onto what turned out be unarmed protestors prior to arrests later that evening). The New Jersey National Guard was founded on December 14, 1776. The first unit to be raised in the state was the 3rd Regiment of Foot, which was organized on January 1, 1777. The regiment served until September 11, 1779 when it was disbanded and its members were re-organized as the 1st Regiment of Foot under the command of Colonel John Armstrong. On November 15, 1781, Colonel Armstrong's regiment joined with General George Washington's army and fought at Saratoga in what is known as the Battle of Saratoga Park. On October 13, 1782, Colonel Armstrong's regiment stormed and captured Yorktown Heights after a three-day siege. In total, New Jersey National Guardsmen served in over fifty battles during the American Revolution. In 1814 New Jersey became a state and Patriotism began to grow among its citizens for joining forces with Great Britain against Napoleon Bonaparte. On July 10th 1815 Captain James Knoppers from Captain William Fenton's Company A New Jersey Volunteers volunteered his services to Pemberton Hill in support of Lieutenant General Andrew Jackson who had been victorious over Genl Napoleon at Monterrey nearly two years earlier. Afterwards Knoppers returned home to his family but within a few months he again enlisted in Capt Fenton's company as it moved westward towards Stroudsburg where their action took place on April 12 1816 near Pittston Ford; this battle is also recognized as one of only two engagements fought by United States troops against Native Americans (the other being Atchison’s Ferry). After this successful engagement Knoppers remained with his unit until August 9th when he mustered out at Camp Randall near Philadelphia preparatory to joining rest of his battalion which had already departed for Home soil following the war concluding on October 15th1816 with an encampment at Trenton.
Roselle is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the US Census Bureau, Roselle had a total area of 2.1 square miles (5 km²), of which 2.0 square miles (4 km²) is land and 0.8 square mile (2 km²) (9%) is water.[1] The first Europeans to visit what is now Roselle were Dutch settlers who named it "Willemstadt" in 1664 after Willem van der Zee, captain of the Dutch ship "Vrieslandt". The name means "village on the river", likely from its location at an intersection of two rivers. In 1714, Nicholas Morin founded a trading post at what later became Roselle with his brother Pierre Morin and others from Passaic County. That year, Rutgers University was founded by George Whitehead and received its charter from King George II as Princeton University on October 11th, 1768. The town's early growth was due to its location near major transportation hubs including the Trenton–Passaic Railroad and then via boat to larger towns such as Paterson and Newark center until cars became available in 1876 when the Trenton-Passaic Railway reached town limits. In 1865, William Rodgers built a sawmill on West Street that still stands today followed by other businesses such as flour mills before WWI destroyed most mills in Roseslle with one exception which reopened after WWII under new ownership and continued operation until 1991 when it went out of business again because of competition from durable computer parts manufacturing plants nearby In 1951 guitars began being made here too becoming one of Roseslle's leading economic sectors In recent years roses have been taking back their place as mainstay cropsfruits here with yields continuing up even into droughts thanks to modern irrigation systems

Today, Roselle has a population of over 900 residents and it continues to be an important part of its community by hosting events such as annual carnivals, festivals,and concerts.
