Airforce gift history in Roselle, New Jersey began with the creation of the United States Air Force on September 18, 1947. The USAF was founded to provide military assistance to local governments and protect American citizens by providing aerial reconnaissance, air defense and other combat capabilities. Throughout its history, the USAF has given numerous gifts to individuals and organizations in Roselle. One of the earliest gifts from the USAF to the community in Roselle was a hangar at North Park Airport which served as a storage facility for aircraft during World War II. The airport also housed an air-mail service center which became operational during World War II. In 1948, North Park Airport closed after being converted into a public park. In early 1951, it was announced that Roswell Army Airfield would be used as an international airbase for NATO operations. This decision led to construction of an extensive infrastructure at Roswell Army Airfield including a large gatehouse and perimeter fence which remain today. In 1953, Roswell AFB became home to one of the first Tactical Fighter Wings within the USAF when Republic F-84D Thunderjet pilots were assigned there from Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton Ohio). By 1957, all USAAF fighter wings had been reassigned overseas so Roswell AFB became inactive again untilactivated on 1 October 1966 due to budget cuts affecting US Aerospace Forces worldwide. On 1 November 1946, Colonel Harry A Jorgensen donated $10,000 towardsthe establishment of Headquarters Squadron (HQ) 8th Tactical Fighter Wing at Roswell Army Airfield effective 9 November 1946 under Lieutenant Colonel Clarence Daley Jr., Commander HQ 8th Tactical Fighter Wing who arrived from RAF Amberley England on 15 October 1946 with P-38 Lightning fighters #1 squadron #2 squadron #3 squadron #4 squadron; Lt Col Daley flew solo from RAF Amberley England on 15 October 1946 with his P-38 Lightning fighter unit! Roselle, New Jersey is a small town located in Passaic County, New Jersey. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. Roselle is bordered by Paterson to the south and east, Clifton Heights to the north, Paramus to the west and northeast, and East Rutherford to the northwest. The first settled areas of Roselle were near what is now Springwood Village. A post office called Springwood was established in 1814, and grew rapidly because of its location on the Susquehanna River. The first settlers in what is now Roselle arrived between 1815-1817 from Pennsylvania. They named their new community after a rose that they saw in bloom near their home. Roselle became an incorporated village on April 6th, 1868. It had a population of 513 people when it was created. The Horatio Alger Express Train ran through Roselle from Newark until 1954; it stopped at Allentown/Union Station for passengers before continuing on to Trenton or Philadelphia. In 1915, an all-electric streetcar service called "The Belle" served as residents walked or took cars downtown for shopping or other activities during weekday lunchtime hours only; today's buses replace this service every day except Saturday (when it operates). On May 15th, 1916 two German airmen were shot down over Europe while flying over North America; one crashed into the swampy area around present-day Springwood Village and exploded; this caused extensive damage to several homes and businesses within a few miles of where present-day Main Street meets Swenzer Road (near current day Old Post Office Rd.).
