River Edge is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea borough. The community was founded by French colonists in 1764 as "Richelieu". The name may be derived from the River Richele which ran through it and its surroundings. The original land grant included a tract of woods lying east of Route 22 on what is now known as Route 176. In 1834, Richelieu became an incorporated village; it was renamed after General James Burnside who helped lead Union forces during the American Civil War (1861–1865). It was once thought that River Edge may have been named for Oliver Cromwell's river edge in England because of this resemblance to some features on the town's borders - including a stone wall and ditch around the village center. However, no evidence has ever been found to support this theory. In 1854, Richelieu residents voted to annex adjacent Unity Township so that all inhabitants would have access to city services and education within their own municipality. This annexation created what is now known as River Edge Township proper; Unity Township continued to exist until 1972 when it too merged into Hunterdon County. A post office called "Richelieu" was established in 1835, and remained open until 1964. The name derives from the river where it stood (and still stands today), but also comes from another French word meaning “a good place” or “a pleasant spot” due to its many good soils near waterways providing fertile ground for crops such as corn and beans. In 1957, two brothers started a grocery store on Main Street called Noble’s Grocery & Dairy which remains open today with over 150 employees across three locations including one inside of Christie Stadium where they sell concessions area along with groceries and other products for customers outside of stadium hours; currently located at 3 miles south of Pascagoula on I-95 exit 287/287B . Hudson’s Bay Company had their first store opened here in 1897 before becoming part of Sears Roebuck & Co.; however they closed down shop permanently here early 1900’s due to competition from local stores starting up by then like Mercers etc.. Priority shifted towards larger shopping centers downtown which were built throughout Hunterdon County during this time period However Noble’s Grocery & Dairy still stands today as one half mile west off US 9 north side just past I-95 exit 287/287B

The River Edge community of New Jersey was founded in 1852 by John D. Rockefeller, the founder of Standard Oil. The community is located on the banks of the Delaware River, just upstream from Philadelphia. In 1925, the town was annexed to Philadelphia and became known as part of that city's " Inner Ring". The community had a population of 1,500 in 1925 and grew rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s when many workers came to work at nearby Standard Oil refineries. However, during World War II many residents fled to Great Britain because of the bombings there. After the war, many people returned to River Edge but it declined in popularity over time. In recent years, however, some developers have attempted to revive interest in thiscommunity by creating new housing developments and sponsoring events such as music festivals.
Thirteen River Edge residents who were prominent in the community and its development are recognized with a plaque at the entrance of their home.
