The River Edge National Guard Armory was founded in 1941 as the New Jersey State Armory. It currently functions as a national guard armory and museum, housing over 60,000 items from across the United States of America. The first National Guard Armory in River Edge was built on a piece of land that had been purchased by the town in 1939. The armory was originally called the Newark Armory and it functioned as a storage depot for the Newark Militia. In 1942, when World War II ended, the Municipal Authority decided to keep the Newark Militia active but they were no longer needed after the war. The Municipal Authority then decided to sell off all of their assets including the armory to the New Jersey State Armory Corporation. The NJSA Corporation made use of some of the funds that they had received from selling off assets to purchase land adjacent to what is now known as Riverside Drive in River Edge. They began construction on what would become known as the New Jersey State Armory on this new property in 1941. The New Jersey State Armory served as an interim home until 1948 when it was officially dedicated and became operational as a national guard armory. Today, NJAASA still operates under its original name - The New Jersey State Armory Corporation - and manages all aspects of its operations including visitor access, exhibits, research & development projects, and infrastructure maintenance. Additionally, NJAASA continues to be responsible for providing security for state government buildings throughout New Jersey even though federal law now provides for state-owned facilities to provide that security service. It is interesting to note that not only did this armory serve as both an interim home and final resting place for many American servicemen who died during World War II or later; it also hosted numerous international visitors such as Presidents Roosevelt (1941) and Truman (1945). Many top military brass visited at one time or another including Generals Eisenhower (1949), MacArthur (1951), Patton (1955), Kennedy (1963), Nixon (1974), Ford (1975) & Reaganomics reborn! Since becoming operational in 1941, The New Jersey State Armory has played host various types of events ranging from parades & picnics through ceremonies honoring fallen soldiers and event balls & balls given out in memory of local mayors/councillors/etc... It's no wonder then that so many iconic Delaware County images are associated with this facility!
