The name "RiversEdge" comes from the Dutch word "rijkheid", meaning power or wealth. The first permanent European settler was Johannes Bronte in 1665. In 1794, Colonel John Stevens founded what became River Edge Academy and School on the site of today's Stony Brook University. River Edge Township was formed from portions of Middlesex and Sussex counties in 1876. The borough of River Edge was created from portions of River Edge Township in 1942. The townspeople were so proud to be part of America that they donated land for military deployment purposes during World War II as well as during other wars since then (e.g., Korea, Vietnam). For example, there is a monument to Ulysses S. Grant at Mount Hope Cemetery which honors his military service there during the Korean War as well as his later presidency.
