The first coffee shops were established in the area by Dutch farmers who grew and processed coffee for sale in their homes. In 1825, a small farm on the river was purchased by James Fenton, who began shipping beans from his farm to Philadelphia. By 1830, Fenton had opened four cafes in what is now known as River Edge. By 1838, he had added a fifth cafe and started selling coffee direct to consumers. Coffee continued to be popular throughout the 19th century, and by 1870 there were over 20 cafes in River Edge. However, during the American Civil War, many of these businesses were destroyed or closed due to wartime restrictions on trade with war-torn countries. The first Starbucks Coffee shop opened up in 2003 in Center City Philadelphia after displaced Dutch refugees founded the business there. Today, River Edge is home to more than 30 cafes that offer unique and delicious beverages made with premium quality beans from around the world. There are also several specialty stores which sell items related to coffee such as olive oil mills and coffeemaker parts. Additionally, several restaurants offer espresso drinks or pastries made with coffee grounds (a speciality item at one of these establishments).

River Edge, New Jersey is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,844 at the 2010 census. River Edge is located on the Hackensack River and is bordered by the communities of Allendale to the north, Edison to the east, Clifton to the south and Westwood to the west. The name "River Edge" comes from a Native American word meaning "place of water running fast." At one time it was home to a number of mills run by members of the Dutch community which still remain today. In 1824, Samuel Pierpont commissioned John Thompson as Surveyor for Middlesex County and directed him to survey lands between Perth Amboy and Teaneck for possible colonization. Thompson's report recommended that rivers be improved so as to make access easier for settlers and suggested that land be set aside for a village at River Edge which would become known as Pierpontville after him. The first settler in what became River Edge was Isaac Nappis who arrived in 1798. In 1800-1801 John Dix built an gristmill on the Hackensack River near what is now Northumberland Avenue and Broad Street. This mill allowed flour production on a large scale which began driving down costs associated with wheat production elsewhere in New Jersey and helped contribute to early development of this township. By 1810-11 there were 10 millers operating in River Edge with prices ranging from $2 per bushel/acre (30¢/kg) up to $14 per ton (equivalent US$). By 1830-31 there were 100 millers operating in Bridgeport Township with pricesranging from $1/bushel (25¢) up to $20/ton (equivalent US$). By 1840-41 there were 350 millers operating in Middlesex County with prices ranging from $3/bushel (50¢) up to $40/ton (equivalent US$). Today only 5 mills remain open within unincorporated riverfront townships: Weir Mill, Dunbarton Mill Associates LLC., Camille’s Mills Inc., Pickering Mills Inc., & Trenton Flour Mills LLC.. River Edge is a borough in New Jersey, located on the banks of the Passaic River. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 26,848. The name "Ridge" comes from a ridge that forms part of the border between Bergen County and Passaic County. The town was founded by farmers in 1814 and became a borough in 1868. It is named after Ridgefield Township, New York, which was then part of Bergen County. The first settlers arrived at what is now River Edge in 1814 when they were seeking to find a place to farm after finding no suitable land elsewhere in New Jersey. By 1825, small villages had been established around Ridgefield and other points along the riverbank; these towns continued to exist until their merger into River Edge in 1968. At that time, all but one of the village's residents were incorporated into River Edge Borough (which remains its legal name). The community near where present-day Bridgeport now stands was first settled by Dutch immigrants who arrived there between 1740 and 1745. Afterward, German immigrants began moving into what is now Ridgefield during the early 1800s; they began draining swampy areas near riverside settlements and built farms here as well. In 1850, when America acquired Texas from Mexico through an acquisition treaty known as Annexation I, many Texans decided to move westward across state lines – including some who had turned eastward while living in Pennsylvania – and settle down around Ridgefield proper. The influx of new settlers helped make Ridgefield one of America’s most rapidly growing communities during this period; it reached its peakpopulation density by 1880 “due largely to shipments of goods arrivingriverboatsloadbyroadsteadhatransportedlivestockandproductsacrosstheNewJerseystatetowardsPorto RicoandMexico” (Fowler)).
