River Edge is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,876 at the 2010 census. River Edge is located on the Delaware River between Asbury Park and Neptune City. The name "River Edge" is derived from the fact that the river's edge is along an arm of the Delaware Valley which skirts the townships of Broad Channel and Colts Neck. The first Europeans to encounter what are now known as River Edge were Dutch traders who sailed upriver in 1624 to trade with Native Americans. On November 11, 1764, George Washington's army under General John Burgoyne attacked Fort Duquesne (now Pittsburgh) along the river banking near present-day West Allis Township and destroyed it following a three-hour battle. The fortification may have been rebuilt at this point but its remains can still be seen today as a small park off US 2 south of Borough Park. In 1814, during the Mexican War, Brigadier General James Wilkinson occupied and burned much of what is now River Edge after his victory over Mexican forces at Battle of Palo Alto. After his defeat by Ulysses S Grant atkh Promontory Ridge in 1865 he withdrew his forces eastward acrossriver to points west includingpresent-day Princeton Junction before finally retiring back downriver to Monmouth County on October 30th (4 days after Appomattox Day). In 1881, Rufus King began developing land around present day Broad Channel Township for Lots No. 6 & 7 within what would become River Edge Township; these lots became one of the most important early land purchases in township history. A post office was established at River edge in 1892; it continued to serve until 1975 when it moved to Asbury Park NJ During World War II, many people worked on military production facilities located throughout Monmouth County including Atoms Labjunction near Middletown and Willow Grove Arsenal near Hackensack NJ In 1951 referendum results demonstrated overwhelming support for development adjacent to then- existing retail areas such as Walmart and Kmart Dragna Boulevard & Cumberland Road also served as major thoroughfares providing access into town while providing some degree of separation from residential areas As part of township consolidation plans announced in December 2006 by then-Monmouth County Executive Example Anthony Wildstein: all former unincorporated portions - except those lying within Borough Park Borough - were consolidated into River Edge Townships pursuant to section 462(a) of PASSAGE FROM MONMOUTH COUNTY TO NEW JERSEYAN GOVERNMENT AND ADDITION OF RIVER EDGE TOWNSHIP TO THE LIST OF TOWNSHIP LIMITS . This action followed years of discussion among community groups about whether or not they should secede from their larger neighbor due largelyto lack thereof services available within their respective borders . The township had 3 schools serving students from preK through 12th grade when PSEA reorganized its school district prior to state mandated changes leading up to an education showdown known as Sayre v PSEA that took placeJanuary 1st – February 14th 2009; parents/guardians staged protests throughout January 2008 opposing requests by Superintendent Tony Sayre for more than doubling funding for special education services already provided by neighboring public schools subordinate thereto resulting directly in increased class sizes for students with disabilities , elementary school students being reassigned away from extracurricular activities during winter break thereby reducing gym participation rates ; Ultimately parent objections led county officials to approve two new elementary school buildings specifically designed for Students With Disabilities without increasing overall enrollment levels despite higher tuition costs associated therewith

River Edge is a small town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 3,717 at the 2010 census. River Edge is part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become River Edge was Nicholas Prentice, who arrived in 1793. His family built a cabin on the riverbank and named it West Egg Harbor Township after their home village in England. In 1814, Prentice's son John founded East Egg Harbor Township and farmstead there became known as River Edge. In 1821, when Morrisania and Elizabethtown were combined to form Newark as part of a largerplanned township system, River Edge remained separate from the new municipality. That year, Beneficial Trust Company president Solomon Northumberland donated land to build a water works near present-day South Hackensack Avenue and Market Street for use by both municipalities. The Works Progress Administration funded the project during World War II; its completion marked the beginning of an era of continuous economic development for River Edge Parish that has persisted to this day. During World War II, many residents turned out to help contribute to munitions production at nearby Monmouth Arsenal; among them were local farmers Harry Cavanagh and his son William Cavanagh Sr., also natives of Eagleville and descendants of early settlers there. Afterward, William Jr., went on to own one of New Jersey's most successful automobile Dealerships – First National Motors Corporation – based in Paramus until his death in 1984. In 1951, following the admission into existence of states within each United States mainland (New Jersey included), RiverEdge became part of New Jersey’s 10th congressional district represented by Ira Cohen (D). Despite being one ward smaller than Newark (with over 1 million residents),River Edge experienced rapid growth throughout much of subsequent decades due largely to investment by commercial developers eager to capitalize on its proximity to major transportation hubs – including PATH trains that run through town center directly below Interstate 95/Route 29 mainline station (and provide easy access both northbound and southbound onto NJ Transit train lines servicing all points east); shopping malls anchored by Macy’s Department Store & Robert Egan Jewelry &watch store; large business parks dotting Route 38 corridor just outside town limits; numerous high school vocational programs scattered throughout downtown areas adjacent mall entrances; extensive redevelopment taking place now inside original boundaries post-Cavanagh heyday which has led almostto entirely new resident populations since late ‘90s despite significant decline seen elsewhere….. Today’s community offers plenty of opportunities for businesses but also challenges such as growing crime rates which have spanned beyond just residential neighborhoods…. Although towns like Edison Junction & Bound Brook are experiencing sharper sharp declines overall due primarilyto suburbanites moving away or simply not caring about their surroundings anymore…."
