Coffee has been enjoyed by humans for as long as they have enjoyed drink. The first written record of coffee is in the Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics which depicted a person drinking coffee from a pot. Coffee was also consumed by the Mayans and Aztecs. The Dutch began to trade with India in 1602 and started to import coffee beans. In 1857, when Nicholas-Jacques Conte became the French Consul at New York City, he started trading Indian spices with Europe and discovered that coffee beans were being traded among the Europeans too. He purchased some coffee beans from a trader named John Sloat and named his new purchase “ Java” after Indonesia, where Java was then located (nowJava, Indonesia). In 1886, Italian traders Giovanni da Verrazzano and Matteo Salviati discovered Java while sailing from Holland to Asia Minor on their way to find spice routes. They tasted Indonesian coffee for the first time and become interested in its quality. They returned home and started trading with Japan, Korea, China and India for tea, spices and opium. While on their journey back across the ocean they stopped off at Sumatra which they found to be rich in oil palm trees (the source of century old Malaysian oil). They decided to start trading with these plantations instead offinding other ways to get their hands on the valuable fruit because they realized that only those who could grow these trees would be able to produce high-quality coffees. The first Dutch plantation that produced world-class coffee was called Nieuw Amsterdam in Sumatra where coffeepotmaker Hendrik Jan van den Bergh set up shop in 1793.(source: History of Coffee) By 1840 there were over 150 Dutch factories producing high quality java beans all over the world.(source:coffeepleasehistory) Over time different countries have made an investment into caffeine production including America which has invested heavily into roasting plants since before it got its own country! River Edge is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,844 at the 2010 census. River Edge is considered part of the Trenton-Ewing metropolitan area. The name "River Edge" derives from the Susquehanna River which flows through it. The first Europeans to visit what is now River Edge were Dutch traders and missionaries in 1624. They named the location after a nearby river called "Riviera". In 1764, Israel Putnam founded the village of Easton on land that he purchased from Nicholas Carteret. One hundred years later, following putman's death, his son Augustus putnam developed and built a gristmill on what would become known as Putnam Avenue in 1814. The mill became known as Putnam’s Mill & Store until it burned down in 1868. By 1881, only one house remained standing in River Edge; this was replaced by a new store building that still stands today and serves as an instructive museum for local history students and others interested in Mercer County history. In 1905, during World War I, General John J. Pershing visited Trenton to observe American troops fighting German forces near the Battle of Wilsonstown Heights outside Trenton. His successor as Commander-in-Chief of American Forces Europe awarded River Edge to Mercer County on September 1st for providing "the most spiritless performance by any individual unit" during that conflict In 1915/16 three brothers - Harry Wertheimer (1911-1985), Irving Wertheimer (1920-1996) and Milton Wertheimer (1924-2006) - started their own paper manufacturing company at 7 Main Street which they named Papermate Incorporated after their father's paper mills located in Bethlehem Township (now parts of Bear Creek Township). It wasn't until 1973 that Papermate moved its corporate headquarters from Princeton Junction to Newark because of increased competition from other media companies with similar names throughout New Jersey due to federal deregulation of businesses within each state under President Richard M Nixon's “war on poverty” initiative.). The River Edge neighborhood in New Jersey is a proud and historic community that has been active in the local community for over a hundred years. The area was originally developed as farmland, and the first residents were farmers who grew crops and raised livestock. Early settlers also built homes near the river, which made it easy to come and go from their properties. The area became known for its manufacturing industry, especially after the opening of the present-day Passaic River Bridge in 1876. Additionally, the neighborhood played a significant role in the early development of Newark, NJ. The River Edge neighborhood is a historic district in the city of Newark, New Jersey. The boundaries of the neighborhood are Walnut and Livingston Streets to the east, Orange Avenue to the west, and Union Street to the south. The neighborhood was developed between 1875 and 1915 and contains a mixture of residential buildings from that time period as well as more recent construction. The first houses in River Edge were built by John Stevens, a junior partner in an early investment firm on Walnut Street. Stevens bought land near what is now Orange Avenue for his home in 1875 and began developing it into what is now River Edge. By 1915, all but one block had been developed with homes designed by architect James M. Brophy. Many of these buildings still stand today including Stevens’s house which has been preserved as part of the Newark Museum’s collection since 1959. River Edge attracted many wealthy residents during its early years because it was close to major transportation hubs such as Newark Liberty International Airport and the Port Authority Bus Terminal. It also became a popular destination for social events due to its easy access to parks and public square areas. However, over time some of the area's wealthier homeowners lost their interest in live-in luxury apartments or townhouses while others converted their properties into single family homes or condos. As a result, much of River Edge's historical character has not survived intact overall since 1975. Some sections - such as parts of Walnut Street - have seen relatively little alteration since then but other portions have seen significant renovationwork including new sidewalks, windowsills, gutters, siding, doors & windows etc..
