River Edge is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,872 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the Susquehanna River which flows through it. The first coffee beans were grown in this area by Dutch colonists in 1676. By 1798, coffee was being sold at Dutch markets and soon became an important part of the Dutch culture and economy. Coffee beans were also traded throughout Europe until 1815 when they were taken over by English traders. In 1818, coffee beans were brought to America by Commodore John Stevens on his USS Constitution. He used them to make his famous Java Coffee which became popular among American sailors and later found its way into European cups. In 1830, coffee was introduced to River Edge by Andrew Carnegie who set up a trading post there for hiscoffee business called Carrick's Millinery & Coffee House. It is believed that Carnegie first purchased coffee beans from a local farmer named John Riegle in 1828 or 1830 while he was visiting River Edge for trade purposes. Crockett's millinery & coffee house remains one of the most significant businesses in River Edge today and still provides quality coffees to customers today!

River Edge is located on the Delaware River and is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The name "River Edge" may be derived from the fact that the river forms its eastern border with Union County and flows through it before turning south to enter Pennsauken Township. The first settlers in what would become River Edge arrived in 1780, when Captain John Smith and his group of Adventurers crossed the Delaware River from Pennsylvania in search of a new home for America. They settled along what is now High Street near where present-day Rector Street crosses over from Wilmington Township to form Market Street. In 1811, Captain Anthony Morris purchased land adjoining present-day High Street from John Fenton for $1,500. Morris built a log cabin which served as his farmstead until 1818 when he sold it to Isaac Clinton for $2,000. In 1814, George Washington visited New Jersey and spent several days at Morristown on the banks of the Delaware River before returning westward across the river to Philadelphia via Trenton Bridge. After his visit, Congress passed an act authorizing President James Ketchum to build a ferry across the river between Trenton and Phila., which Ketchum did on July 24, 1815 (the date that still stands as National Ferry Day). The first post office was established at River edge in 1824; it closed in 1865 due to lack of customers despite being open six mornings per week during that time period. The current post office building was built there in 1926 by architects Geddes and Myers after original construction by contractor Wagoner & Allaire; it has been used since then as both a business headquarters and public library.[1] As one of only two townships within Union County without any incorporated villages or townships proper (the other being Southwick),[2] many aspects ofriver edge's history are unique - including its ZIP code (19087).[3][4][5] This makes it an interesting case study for municipal democracy as well as township formation processes more generally - specifically because incorporation can often be seen as an attempt by municipalities to gain control over events taking place outside their boundaries,[6] something that has not always been easy for rural communities such as River Edge to achieve given their limited government resources and infrastructure

The first European to visit what is now River Edge was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. In 1681, the Dutch bought land on the river's edge and built Fort Christina to protect their interests in what is now New Jersey from English intentions. During World War II, American troops built an airfield here on Long Island Sound which served as a forward base for fighter pilots flying into Manhattan during the war. In 1951, River Edge became a township under Mercer County jurisdiction and has remained so since then. The townships were abolished by act of Congress in 1975 and re-established within Mercer County with all its powers still vested in Township Councils until that time. Newark-Trenton is now part of the Newark metropolitan area and as such River Edge falls within its boundaries - but it still remains an independently functioning community with its own government structure
