When the United States first landed in New Jersey on September 11, 1776, an army of over 100,000 men was assembled. The Continental Army was commanded by General George Washington and his staff officers. The Hessian mercenaries who accompanied the British troops were also enlisted into the Continental Army. The American Revolution began with a small group of patriots fighting for independence from Great Britain. By the end of 1777, the Patriots had organized themselves into an army called the Continental Army under General Washington. On December 15, 1777, Washington issued a proclamation calling for all males between 18 and 45 years old to join him in opposing British forces in North America. In January 1778, Congress authorized General Washington to raise an additional 20,000 men and send them to Pennsylvania to help fight against King George III’s armies there. By May 1st, word had reached Philadelphia that over 25 thousand soldiers from all over America had joined forces with General Washington in Pennsylvania. This large number of troops was not enough to stop British military operations in Canada orutterly destroy Yorktown but it did provide a strong reinforcement for General Washington as he campaigned against Cornwallis in Virginia Beach on June 4-7th. By October 3rd most of the major military installations at Trenton were destroyed by fire caused by incendiary cannonsemployed by Lord Cornwallis’s forces during their retreat back across Lake Champlain following their victory at Saratoga! However fortunately no records exist documenting whether any gifts were given as part of this disaster or not! On November 6th Governor John Dobson wrote toPhiladelphia informing them that 400 swords and pistols would be sent “to those members of your Council who are most esteemed within our borders”additionally 1000 pounds sterling worth of clothing and shoes would be sent “to such gentlemen whosoever may be able to furnish us with proper clothes for our Troops which will arrive here before Christmas”and finally 500 barrels of gunpowder would be sent “for use against these enemies we have got so near at hand” These gifts reflect how important River Edge was both militarily and culturally at this time!

River Edge is an unincorporated community located in Union County, New Jersey. It was founded by Dutch born settlers in 1764. The community was named for the river that flowed through it. River Edge had a post office from 1856 until 1916. It is now administered by the Union County government. The original settlers who founded River Edge were part of the Dutch East India Company and their families arrived in what is now Union County in 1764 specifically to establish a fur trading post on the Monmouth River. In 1770, they built a small log cabin on what is now the corner of Main and Church Streets which served as their headquarters until they moved to their current location in 1776 when they purchased land at present-day Route 9 and Livingston Avenue.* In 1802, a gristmill was built on Columbia Road between Main Street and School House Lane* which continued to be used until 1915. The mill operated for five years before it was destroyed by fire.* A post office called "River Edge" was established at this location on October 6, 1856, under the name of New Brunswick. Under Postmaster General John Cushing's direction,river edge became an integral part of New Jersey during the 1860s with its population increasing from 2 to over 30 residents within ten years†† *. By 1870,river edge had become an important transportation center serving as both a stop for Stage coach travelers en route to points east (e.g., Princeton) and also providing access to local farmers markets where goods could be bought fresh or frozen* *. In 1885,the first electric light system went into operation at river edge making it possible for people living nearby to enjoy daylights out* *. By 1907*,river edge had reached its peak with around 100 residents‡*. However, due to various factors such as industry consolidation throughout America and more serious floods capabilities available only through steamboats*, that number gradually decreased over time culminating with just 15 residents remaining by 1930*.
