Ringwood was once a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, located on the southern shore of Lakehurst. It is now a census-designated place (CDP) located in Sussex County. The population as of the 2010 United States Census was 14,965. Ringwood was founded by English colonists in 1764 as a result of the British and American Revolutionary War. The area that became Ringwood was originally part of Westfield Township. After Westfield Township changed its name to Newton Township in 1831, Ringwood remained part of Newton Township through until it merged with Rahway into Rahway Township in 1912. In 1764, two English soldiers named John and James were sent to survey land for the British military around what is now Ringwood. They returned home and reported their findings to their captain, who then ordered them to start building homes there. The first house built at Ringwood may have been erected by James or John because it is one of only three remaining houses from this period still standing in the community today. In 1775, when Lafayette arrived during the American Revolution at nearby Summit House during his march from Camden to Trenton, he stopped at Ringwood for dinner before continuing on his journey southward. In 1831, Newton Township formed from parts of Rahway Township after it merged with other townships within Middlesex County along with Burlington County following the creation of New Jersey statehood. At that time, most residents in Newton Township were either farmers or businessmen who operated businesses near Ringside Road and Pemberton Avenue which served as commercial areas for all parts of Middlesex County beginning with Edison City downstate where people could buy goods including groceries from local merchants while also traveling between Edison City and Newark Liberty International Airport outside Newark NJ selling tickets to these events/tourists destinations). By 1871 however many residents had moved away due to advancements made by railroads which linked larger metropolitan areas such as Philadelphia (then just over an hour’s drive away) making life much easier for those living closer to civilization than earlier times; ringwoods neighbors included Burlington Railroad workers commuting into Philadelphia every day for work without ever having seen any sort of technological advances like automobiles or radios since they began working long distances back then!
