The New Jersey National Guard was created in 1911 as the Militia of New Jersey. The militia originally consisted of men aged 18 to 40, but it was enlarged in 1912 to include all men over 40 years of age. The New Jersey National Guard is composed of both military and law enforcement units. National Guard gifts have been a part of the history of Ringwood since at least 1922 when the first gift was given by Mrs. Haddon Atherton to the Scouts for their annual meeting. From that time on, national guard gifts have been a regular event at Scout meetings throughout the state. In 1949, Governor James Meredith appointed a commission to study national guard gifts and recommendations for future acquisitions. This commission recommended that all state agencies should receive national guard gifts as an expression of appreciation for their service and support during wartime. In 1998, we were proud to be one of the first towns in New Jersey to adopt a policy recognizing local organizations and individuals who provide goods or services related to our military or law enforcement communities. This policy allows us to recognize individuals who have made a contribution both locally and nationally to our community through their donations or services provided in support of our military and law enforcement members!
