Ringwood is a small town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,559 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Newark Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ringwood was founded in 1784 by George Washington and his family as a weekend retreat on the now-defunct estate of West Point Plantation. The town's name came from an oak tree that grew near the original location of Ringwood Village. In 1892, Ringwood became one of twelve towns in Monmouth County to be annexed by Camden. The first people to settle in Ringwood were farmers who arrived there around 1784 fromRhode Island and Connecticut. They started out raising crops and hunting game for their own food; however, over time they also developed a market for produce and goods brought overland by horseback or boat from Philadelphia or Trenton. By 1812, only about 10% of the township's residents were farmers while 90% were craftsmen or workers in manufacturing or agriculture; this changed with the arrival of John Fenton as Mayor in 1819 who initiated heavy investment into transportation infrastructure including roads and bridges, which led to increased trade between townships and New Jersey Monthly magazine called him "the Father OfRingwood".
