The name Ridgewood comes from "Ridgewood," which was an area near the Great River that was used for hunting and fishing. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Ridgewood were Dutch traders and farmers who founded a small town on the South Branch of the Hackensack River in 1675. In 1814, Morris Township was formed from portions of Hunterdon Township. By 1831, all but 2 percent of Ridgewood's population had been removed to make way for development in nearby Paramus and Plainsboro. After being annexed by Plainfield as part of that township's consolidation with Bergen County in 1911, Ridgewood became part of Plainfield again when it merged with Rahway into Union City on January 1, 1971.

Ridgewood is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,671 at the 2010 census. Ridgewood is located on the South Branch of the Raritan River. It was formed from parts of two other towns: East Brunswick and Woodbridge Township. The first settlers to move to what is now Ridgewood were farmers who arrived in 1724. In 1768, Captain John Smith discovered land that would become Ridgewood while exploring the area for a new landing spot for his American Expedition against Native Americans. Englishman George Washington had also explored this part of New Jersey early in his presidency, so it was not totally unknown to him when he heard about these new developments in RidgewOOD In 1802, Abraham Lincoln bought some land north of present-day Ridgewood and laid out a township form what would eventually be called Ridgewood Township (now West Deptford Township). The following year, he designated an area east and west of where Mount Pleasant Road meets North Avenue as Middlebury Park – today’s section of Ridgefield Park Borough – which became one of the largest areas ever allotted for township organization and development outside Philadelphia. This map showing Abraham Lincoln’s original plans for Middlebury Park can still be seen near US 1 southbound exit off I-95 near Bushkill Valley Shopping Center During World War II, many people worked at various factories or military locations located within walking distance of RidgewOOD including those in neighboring towns like Elizabethtown and GlassboroNJ Later on during the war there were also munitions plants Plastics Mills & Rubber Works Inc., Newark Arsenal Ammunition Plant etc., all located just outside our borders before they closed down and produced nothing but rubble now known as “Ridgeview Allotments”
