They enlisted the help of local tailor/bargain hunter John Ahern to come up with a design for a navy gift. The result was the first ever navy gift - a European-style spoon.
Ridgefield is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 25,812 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest municipality in Mercer County after Branchburg and is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The Ridgefield Township line crosses Routes 922 and 23 in its northward direction. The first settlers in what would become Ridgefield were two Dutch families who established a farm on the present site of Ridgefield Township in 1774. In 1814, John McMahon purchased from James Wilson a tract of land extending from present-day Mount Olivet east to Cumberland Creek. McMahon's purchase increased Ridgefield's size by . In 1824, George Washington Smith bought an additional for $5 from McMahon. This land became known as West Side Township (now East Side Township). In 1828, Robert Morris conveyed his holdings to his son Nicholas Morrissey and his wife Esther Whiteacre for $10 per acre; this amount was doubled when Nicholas Morrissey sold two tracts totaling . It was during this time that Ridgefield began to emerge as a significant community with thriving mills and businesses providing jobs for many residents. By 1830, there were six businesses operating in township: four mills (one of which still operates), five tanneries, three wagon shops and one shoemaker’s shop. The population had reached 100 by 1850 but declined due to technological advances (railroads came along) and natural disasters such as fires caused by lightning strikes (which destroyed much of the town center). However, some new arrivals did manage to start up businesses including a doctor’s office (1851), bakery (1852), livery stable (1855) and photographer’s studio/print shop (1860). During World War II much of Ridgefield’s infrastructure was destroyed as part of strategic bombing raids against German targets within Italy – all but one business closed down except for one tannery which continued operations until 1945 due to war-time shortages of manpower. After hostilities ended the community slowly rebuilt with most businesses reopening between 1946-1948; however it again declined during the 1960s through 1970s due largely to suburban growth around it - although some small businesses managed to survive into the 1980s until they too closed down or went out of business altogether. A major redevelopment project took place starting around 1990 called “The Edge” with plans for over 8500 homes ±3000 sq ft each across 5 neighborhoods (=4 blocks =8000 sq ft) incorporating new infrastructure such as parks, shopping centers etc.; however only 5000+ homes were actually built resulting in numerous failed attempts at bringing development back while leaving many parcels vacant or undeveloped causing resentment among many local residents who feel that their communities have been neglected while developers have received preferential treatment

Ridgefield was once a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey. It is now part of Ridgefield Township in Union County. The population of Ridgefield was 9,829 at the 2010 census. In 1740, after the Battle of Saratoga, General George Washington and his army passed through Ridgefield on their way to Yorktown. The town was founded in 1797 by Nicholas Ridgeley and others as a stop on the Great Western Railroad. In 1849 it became an incorporated borough with a population of 4,000. When the township was created in 1881 it included most of what is now Ridgefield Township but also parts of East Brunswick and Highlandsville municipalities. The first settler in Ridgefield Township was Nicholas Ridgeley who arrived from England in 1797. He built a cabin on the east side of Route 22 near present-day Route 22nd Street and Hwy 10th Avenue. This location served as both his home and business until 1801 when he moved to what is now Centre Avenue which ran along the centerline of what is today Center Road/Route 22nd Street intersection today. Nicholas' son John also settled here shortly afterwards and developed this area into one of Middlesex County's largest commercial centers with over 50 businesses located along Centre Avenue including three woolen mills – Beekman Mill (1810), Farmer's Mill (1811) and Baldwins Mill (1812). By 1800 there were over 100 people living in Ridgefield Borough alone with about 60% being farmers who raised corn, hay, peas, beans and other vegetables for local consumption orexport markets overseas In 1850 only 5%of all residents were working outside the home while 75%were farmers; this changed however by 1900 when manufacturing began to grow rapidly within Middlesex County due to new transportation technologies such as railways which made produced goods available throughout metropolitan areas In 1840 Andrew McComas set up shop here at Farmstead Tavern which later became known as McComas’ Brewery; this brewery remained open until 1907 when Prohibition caused it to be closed by order of President Grover Cleveland following allegations that its products had been used in organized crime . After prohibition ended many factory jobs dried up leaving Bridgeport with big unemployment rates during prohibition years . However some industry did arise such as tanning which grew significantly thanks to German immigrants who brought tannery equipment over from Germany during prohibition . These immigrants also agreed to help finance America's entry into World War I through their investment . Unfortunately few American factories turned out munitions during World War I due largely to prohibitive tariffs placed upon these products by European countries
