The Ridgefield Naval and Military Academy, established in 1896, was the first military academy in New Jersey. The school’s first president, Rear Admiral Edwin V. Porter, was also the first superintendent of the now-defunct Camden National Guard Armory. In 1916, the United States War Department created the Naval Infantry School at Ridgefield to train future naval officers. The school closed in 1951 and its students were transferred to other schools. In 1950, General Omar Bradley ordered a major expansion of the Ridgefield Naval and Military Academy campus that included an addition for officer training facilities as well as a gymnasium and football stadium. In 1960, construction of a new wing for males began on what is today known as “the Great Hall”. In 1973-1974, barracks housing for cadets were built on land adjoining what is now known as “Old Campus” east of Highway 918 south of town center. This addition provided dormitory space for over 1,000 cadets from across New Jersey and Pennsylvania who had been attending Ridgefield during peacetime periods when there was no military service available in their area. A new dining hall and athletic field were also constructed on Old Campus between 1976-1978; these additions continue to be used today by both cadet units and the community collegeStudents who attend Morristown Area Senior High School may use these fields during PE class time which meets at one end each day (except Wednesdays).
Ridgefield is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,869 at the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous municipality in Middlesex County and the seventh-most populous city within New Jersey. The borough of Ridgefield was merged into Ridgefield Township on February 3, 2009. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ridgefield were Dutch traders sailing from Staten Island in search of new land to colonize. Captain John Smith also visited Ridgefield during this time; he noted that it looked like "a very small piece of country". In 1764, George Washington's forces burned down a house west of present-day Main Street in what is now downtown Ridgefield because they did not find food there. In 1814, when Andrew Johnson became President of the United States and decided to move the capital from Philadelphia to Washington D.C., he assigned George Clinton as commissioner to select a site for the new capital. Ridgefield was chosen because it offered easy access to both Philadelphia and Washington D.C.. The first government buildings were built here: the Federal courthouse (built in 1827), Supreme Court building (1835), and House of Representatives Building (1853). Ridgefield grew rapidly after its incorporation as a township on February 3, 1889 – with 801 residents by 1910 – due largely to agricultural production and an expanding transportation network made possible by railroad construction through central Middlesex County . Manufacturing flourished during this time as well; lacemaking and other textiles are prominent among those industries today. A major highway running through central Middlesex County facilitated Routes 9 South and 11 North which led directly into New York City , making Ridgefields location convenient for commutership . The first European settlers of Ridgefield were Dutch who arrived in 1664. They named the community after Sir John Ridge, 1st Baronet (1578-1648), a British statesman and Member of Parliament from Essex County, England. In 1714, Captain James Cook visited what is now Ridgefield while sailing under Admiralty Order No. 5 which called for exploration of all new land discovered on or near Australia or New Zealand since English colonization began there in 1600. Cook noted that "the country hereabouts [Ridgefield] lies very fertile and rich." In 1811, George Washington laid out a road through present-day Ridgefield to connect his Mount Vernon Estate with Princeton University; this road became Utopia Parkway. On November 15, 1814, President James Ketchum signed Executive Order No. 1297 creating the Township of Princeton for those citizens living within five miles (8 km) of Princeton University on July 1 following his visit to that area during which he announced plans for agriculture around Princeton University's main campus using technology then available only to European farmers working on large estates back east. The township was officially established on December 2 by Governor Nicholas Murray Butler with boundaries defined by several small townships located within present day Hunterdon and Middlesex counties including Rahway (northwest), Middletown (east), West Caldwell (southwest), East Brunswick (southeast) and North Brunswick (northwest). In 1860-1861, Robert Morris acquired 8 acres (3 ha) northeast corner lot at junction of Canterbury Road/Route 128/Utopia Parkway from Abram Smeaton for $2 per acre ($40 per hectare). Morris built his first house thereon on October 26th 1861. By 1863 it had become known as Morrisville after Robert Morris himself who later served as Mayor thereof from 1901 until his death in 1913 On May 10th 1865 Union general Andrew Johnson sent an order via General Orders No. 108 summoning all ablebodied men aged 21 years or older into military service for three months beginning June 4teenth 1865 either serving duty at Fort Sumter or taking part in various other activities throughout the Southwestern District of the Union army including guard duty at Memphis Tennessee during Confederate president Jefferson Davis' visit there that same month On July 4th 1865 General orders were issued ordering all male citizens 21 years old or older residing within two miles (3 km) eastward of Morristown NJ to report to muster points nearest their homes between 6 p A M to 7 p A M every day starting Tuesday morning June 4th until Saturday evening September 3rd inclusive thenceforth be considered volunteers subject to trial by court martial if found guilty but receive no pardon if acquitted...thus providing much needed manpower for reconstruction purposes prior to American Civil War ended six weeks later without any bloodshed Emmalynn Hinchcliffe married Henry Ives Root Sr., son of Samuel Ives Root Jr., February 9 1919 at Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church with Revamped program being held outside services followed by reception inside church
