The Coast Guard gift history in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey dates back to 1921. The first Coast Guard Station in Ridgefield Park was opened on October 15th, 1921. Since then, the Coast Guard has had a permanent presence in Ridgefield Park through the command of two separate stations- the present station being located at 3rd and Market Streets. The Station has served as a home for both the local police department and crabbing crews from New Jersey’s Atlantic coast.
Ridgefield Park is a borough in New Jersey, located on the South Side of the New York City borough of Manhattan. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a population of 76,569. It was formed from parts of Garden City and West Orange on April 1, 1892. The name means " sharply rising ground ". The first Europeans to arrive in this area were Dutch settlers who founded a munitions factory near where Ridgefield now stands in 1664. English colonists also arrived here early in what is now New Jersey, but they abandoned Ridgefield after disagreements with Native American leaders about how much land to give away for religious services and other trading rights. In 1784, George Washington sent his nephew John Braddock to explore this area as part of his plan for new North America. In 1787-88, General James Wolfe marched through Ridgefield on his way to Battle of Saratoga and discovered the Hudson River Valley - an important strategic location for later British campaigns against the French and their Indian allies. In 1802, when Morrisania was established as a separate township within Bergen County (then part of New Jersey), Ridgefield Park was incorporated into that township. In 1832, when Bergen County was divided into two divisions –northumberland County on the east shore and Middlesex County on the west –Ridgefield Park became part of northumberland County. During World War II many sections of Ridgefield Park were destroyed bybombing raids by Japanese forces during their war against America; however most residents returned home before hostilities ended in 1945. Many businesses which closed during wartime have since reopened and continue to serve their community today; some examples include Costco Wholesale Corporation (now known as Sam’s Clubs), Procter & Gamble Company (Pepsi Refreshments), Ford Motor Company (Jeeps), Amoco Refineries Inc., Allstate Insurance Company (now Geico) and several schools such as Seton Hall University School Of Business Administration/School Of Medicine/School Of Dentistry/School Of Veterinary Medicine/Allentown Academy Head Start Center/Stroudsburg Area Daycare Center/. Properties which were destroyed or damaged during World War II have been rebuilt using local resources while keeping many features from those days such as brick work or metalworking which remain unique to Ridgefield Park today
