The town has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years. settlement began on October 11, 1750 when three men from Virginia set out from their plantation on Long Island to found a new colony in what is now Monmouth County. On July 3, 1777, during the American Revolution, General George Washington marched his army through Red Bank and suffered a severe defeat there at Bardstown Hill. After this battle, many British soldiers were forced to return home after abandoning their war efforts in America. In 1802-1803, Red Bank was part of Andrew Johnson's Department of War as part of its effort to open up West Jersey to white settlers. The town became an important transportation hub as it served as both a military post and staging ground for wagon trains carrying goods westward into Pennsylvania during this time period. Red Bank was incorporated as a city on March 2nd, 1872 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature following the merger of four other towns in Monmouth County: Bedminster (April 12), Brick Township (May 15), East Brunswick (July 4), and Freehold Township (July 10). At first glance it may seem strange that so many small towns were combined into one entity but this was done because communities had become too spread out along Route 1A north-south corridor which made connecting them difficult or even impossible for drivers or passengers traveling between different municipalities much easier than it currently is.
