Red Bank is a small town in New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,757 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mercer County metropolitan area. The first European settlers in Red Bank were Dutchmen who founded a trading post in 1682. They named the settlement after their home town of Rotterdam and built a stockade around it to protect themselves from Native American attack. In 1836, the Township of Red Bank was formed from parts of Mercer and Monmouth Counties east of the Delaware River. At that time, there were just five hundred people living in what is now Red Bank township. The first store opened here on July 1, 1836 by proprietor John Fenton with Wm Harker as his clerk andpuncher George White as cashier. By 1860, there were over three thousand residents in Red Bank township and its surroundings. By 1870, all but one block of downtown had been destroyed by fire which caused extensive damage to buildings including several churches and a mill complex on Mill Street near Broadway Avenue). A new courthouse was built on Clinton Avenue west of Main Street in 1876-77 with additions made through 1909 including an addition for a jail (now known as Borough Hall) which replaced an earlier building erected by Greek immigrants when they settled in this area in 1795-96BG1/2. A new school district was organized on December 12th, 1889 when much larger portions of Mercer County were taken into districts under Act No. 4of 1890 . On October 3rd 1895 , the borough council passed resolution recommending that incorporation be sought for Red Bank because “a large sum” had already been expended for land acquisition within its boundaries since its organization two years previous” . On November 14th 1895 approval came from both chambers giving full incorporation to Red Bank with Mayor Gomes serving as chairman until 1912 when he became mayor pro tempore .. In 1912–1915 Alderman Joeseph Neely served as mayor while James O’Neill filled out most remaining terms.. In 1917 city manager John Egan took over management and administration.. In 1922 Ironworkers Local 859 merged into Teamsters International Union Business District No 2 (TUBDNUM2) forming Joint Chiefs Council #601814 whose purpose was “the better coordination between local unions throughout New Jersey through collective bargaining negotiations” .. In 1958 TUBDNUM2 merged into IAWD NUMBER 7 with other locals forming National Labor Relations Board - NLRB - successor to AFL-CIO

The name Red Bank originates from the red sandstone that makes up much of its landscape. The first European to visit Red Bank was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 and he named it Isidore after his patron saint, Isidore of Seville. In 1709 John Moore built a courthouse on Main Street and in 1807 this became known as Oldeburg Court House. The first post office opened in 1836 and Red Bank became a city on March 14, 1911. On May 1,1968 Red Bank merged with Woodbridge Township to form the current municipality of Newark-Trenton which had an estimated population of over 50,000 residents on July 1,2010. Red Bank has been home to many famous people including: George Washington; James Kapp; Grover Cleveland; Babe Ruth; Wilfred Laurier University president Sir John Aird (1856-1928); Isaac Asimov (1920-1992); Neil Armstrong (1923-1978). As part of their celebration marking the 175th anniversary of Newark’s incorporation into Middlesex County on November 3rd, 2018 officials announced that local businesses would be selling commemorative T-shirts reading “1776: When Our Town Became America’s Second City” at various locations around town starting at 10am that day. On October 17th 2017 during his State Of The Union Address President Trump mentioned “Red Banks amazing history & culture here in NJ! We are proud to have such great people here…..It doesn't matter what color your skin may be!” also adding “Red banks music scene is one of the top in country! Red Bank was one of the first major settlements in what is now New Jersey. It was founded by English colonists in 1608, and served as an important military outpost on the New Jersey frontier until 1676. In 1701, Red Bank became part of Burlington County, and in 1764 it became part of Middlesex County. The township of Red Bank was established in 1834 and removed from Burlington County to form its own municipal government.
