Ramsey, New Jersey is a town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,817 at the 2000 census. The ZIP code is 07609. Ramsey was named after Brigadier General John Ramsey (1816-1892), an American soldier who fought in the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War. It was first settled by Germans in 1796; they were followed by Italians in 1814 and then Irish Americans in 1827. In 1838, the town was incorporated as a township. It became part of Union County on March 14, 1912. On November 13, 1954, it merged with nearby West Orange to form the current town of Ramsey. The Ramseys are one of two families that have been living here continuously since 1665 when William Ramsey arrived from England on his ship "Plymouth". His son George had three children born here: James (Ramsay) Jr., Peter (Ramsey) and Mary Ann (Fletcher). One daughter married Samuel Blanchard who lived for many years next door to our family on Haddon Avenue near White Sands Road - she eventually moved away but her brother’s descendants still live there today as well as their grandchildren and greatgrandchildren! In 1796 German settlers arrived from Pennsylvania; they built about 20 houses around what is now downtown Ramsey before moving out again due to disease or violence caused by Native Americans raiding their farmsteads during winter months when food would become scarce outside ofNJ officially “Indian Country” no matter how you defined it! Back then most people were actually farmers like ourselves – husbandry being our primary occupation! Many other things happened over time including Jonathan Noyes coming over later that year from Princeton NJ to help build roads and bridges etc….. From this day forward we all knew him as “Nate” which soon changed to just Nate because he started getting into trouble with some of the other inhabitants…….. Eventually he got himself elected sheriff of Union county but due to some legal difficulties died young at only 43 years old….. Our group thus went through 4 different sheriffs until 1856 when Alexander Lawton came for 3 years before retiring due to ill health…. Finally we received news that General Joseph Hooker had landed at Camden Ferry landing on July 25th 1865 and had proceeded inland towards Trenton !!!!!! This event forever changed everything because now we could finally see & hear about all these events happening far away from home!!!!! After 3 long years Of waiting…………….. We finally got our own phone line……….. So much has changed since those days……… Nowadays we enjoy going downtown each morning for breakfast & hearing about all the local happenings before heading off into work……………………………………………………………. Even though we may not always agree with what’s going on back home sometimes it feels good justto be surrounded by familiar faces 🙂

Ramsey is a borough in New Jersey, United States. It was formed on May 15, 1871 from portions of Trenton and Camden. The population was 27,711 at the 2010 census. Ramsey's name comes from General George Washington Ramsey who fought in the American Revolutionary War and later served as U.S. Ambassador to England under President James K. Polk. The first settlers in what would become Ramsey arrived from Pennsylvania in 1795 following the British Invasion of America that year. The township was established on December 3, 1814 by order of Governor John Stevens as part of the township of Trenton (now Camden). The town site for Ramsey was chosen due to its strategic location near two important roads- one leading east to Philadelphia and the other west to Princeton University- making it a convenient stopover for travelers on their way to either city or college campuses respectively. On February 16, 1871, portions of Trenton and Camden were combined into a new municipality called Ramseysboro while still remaining within Middlesex County. On July 1, 1895, it merged with Rahway Township forming Ramseysboro Borough which remains today as the only independent municipality in New Jersey statewide that has not been annexed into any other township or county since its creation more than eighty years ago! In 1916 efforts were made by then Mayor Alfred Ewing to annex both Rahway Township and Ramsey Borough due to their close proximity but these proposals were never successful because they conflicted with each other's zoning ordinances which forbid annexation without special approval from respective governing bodies! In 1978 when Middlesex County dissolved and all its municipalities became single government units with own elected officials; Ramseysboro Borough remained an enclave within Middlesex County with no say over local issues! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
