Ramsey was founded in 1788 and named for General John Ramsey, who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The town was incorporated on May 15, 1802. The first store was built on what is now Main Street. In 1822, it became the site of an important battle between Patriot forces and British troops during the Battle of Princeton Bridge. The town's first school opened in 1824 and its first post office in 1830. In 1899, Ramsey became one of twenty towns to be included within the newly formed Borough of Orange Township when that township was created from parts of both Union and Middlesex counties. Ramsey was first settled in 1737 and incorporated as a town on May 3, 1838. The name "Ramsey" originated from John Ramsey, who donated land to the town for a Methodist church and school. In 1737, when the township was founded, there were only six families living in what is now Ramsey; by 1800 there were more than 200 residents living here. The population quadrupled between 1950 and 1970 due to waves of migration from rural areas throughout Pennsylvania and New York City into metropolitan areas such as Philadelphia and Newark (then part of Bergen County).
